Imeľ: Floodplains, Dunes and Local History
Accommodation in Imeľ
If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Imeľ, it is worth starting with a look at the local landscape. The western part of Imeľ lies on the wet floodplain of the Nitra; the eastern part lies on a low rise with extensive windblown sand deposits. In places, the dunes reach up to ten metres. This means floodplain landscape in the west and sand-shaped terrain in the east sit side by side. For planning your visit, this contrast is a useful starting point: you can distinguish nature features such as wet meadows and bird habitats from the sandy vegetation and historic sites.
Wet Meadows and Bird Habitats
The Veľké lúky area extends across the cadastral territories of Imeľ and Nesvady. Remnants of wet meadows have been preserved on the right bank of the Nitra; in places, there are wet areas with reeds. The European roller (Coracias garrulus) breeds at Veľké lúky, providing a specific point of reference for the birdlife of this wetland.
The Dolné Považie Special Protection Area includes the cadastral territory of Imeľ. The Dolné Považie area falls under the jurisdiction of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO). The flat, wet habitats of Dolné Považie provide a good food source for the western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus). Trees, scattered tree cover and shrub stands create suitable nesting conditions for the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris), lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor), Syrian woodpecker (Dendrocopos syriacus) and European roller. These details distinguish wetland habitats and their birdlife as a nature theme from the sandy east of the municipality.
Dune Sands in the East
The dune-sand area in the east of Imeľ consists of sands and woodland, mostly covered by stands of acacia. Well-preserved psammophilous vegetation grows near the hilltop. The ecological value of the area lies in the secondary diversity of its flora, vegetation cover and psammophytic plant communities. The habitats in the east therefore differ from the wet riverside and meadow areas: sand, woodland and dune vegetation shape the landscape here.
Churches, a Wayside Monument and Handicrafts
The local history can also be traced through specific dates. The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist in Imeľ dates from 1800, and the Reformed Church from 1888. The wayside monument Božie muky dates from 1831. These three dates place these buildings and memorial sites chronologically between 1800 and 1888.
The historical local culture also includes weaving, basketry, corn-straw processing and embroidery, all of which were widespread in Imeľ. These activities add another aspect of local history to the architectural landmarks: local handicrafts.
