Patince: Thermal Springs, the Danube and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Patince
Patince offers several distinct reasons to visit: thermal waters, the Danube, cycling and cultural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel in Patince, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The thermal facilities focus on warm water; the riverside landscape and cycling route offer a different way to experience the area, while the church and pumping station provide insights into its architectural and engineering history.
Thermal Waters and Swimming
The Patince thermal spring emerges from a depth of 160 to 170 metres; at the source, the water temperature is 27 °C. The bathing facilities have their own temperature range: the pools at the summer thermal bath are filled exclusively with water from this thermal spring, and the water temperature there is 24 to 33 °C. This distinguishes the temperature at the source from that in the pools.
Patince Thermal Park has four indoor pools and two outdoor pools. As the pool configuration may change, check the latest visitor information before your trip. The thermal bath is seasonal, so check whether it will be open during your travel dates. The recreation area also includes a natural body of water used for outdoor swimming and boating. The 1.4-hectare boating lake has small islands and is used for water sports, pedal boating and fishing.
The Danube, Natural Areas and Cycling
Patince is located in the Dunajské luhy Special Protection Area. It includes the main channel of the Danube and floodplain forests on the left bank. The protected area’s natural aquatic habitats provide suitable nesting conditions for, among others, the great egret, little bittern, common tern, garganey and common redshank.
For cycling directions, the green-marked Route 5111 is a short spur from EuroVelo 6 to Patince and the recreation area near the municipality. The Danube Cycling Route passes through Patince and is part of EuroVelo 6. Its route runs through Komárno, Iža, Patince, Radvaň nad Dunajom, Moča and Kravany nad Dunajom. The section from Komárno to Kravany nad Dunajom is 30.34 kilometres long: 18 kilometres are on a developed cycling facility and 12.34 kilometres on a marked route. These details answer different planning questions: Route 5111 is the short spur to Patince, while the stated distance applies to the corridor from Komárno to Kravany. Check route conditions before setting off.
Architectural and Engineering History
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Vendelín is a stone, single-nave Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1776. Its raised chancel was partly built using reused materials from Roman times. Written records from the 13th century also mention Patince’s warm springs and baths from Roman times. The local landscape thus brings together a medieval church building, later alterations and historical references to the thermal springs.
The Patince steam pumping station was built in 1897 and is a technical monument. It retains its original machinery, has been fully restored and houses an exhibition on the history of water management in the region. The pumping station is open to the public; check access arrangements before visiting.
Boat Trips and Summer Events
Marina Patince regularly organises sightseeing boat trips on the Danube. The trips usually follow the Patince–Moča route and back, and last approximately one hour. Departures depend on operating conditions; check the timetable before making plans.
Dni mostu priateľstva takes place annually in summer; the Slovak host location alternates among the participating municipalities. The event includes an evening ritual in which candles float on the Danube. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance. A red post on the bank of the Danube marks Slovakia’s southernmost point in Patince.
