Veľké Kosihy is shaped by two clearly distinct themes: habitats within the cadastral area and a local history reflected in religious, estate and engineering buildings. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Veľké Kosihy, you can use these themes to guide your interests in nature, architecture and community development. Nature topics include the salt meadows near Mostové and the Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site.

Natural environment: salt meadows and Danube floodplains

Within the cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy, at the Mostové site, are salt meadow communities of European importance. They are among the most endangered habitats and provide a home for many endangered plant and animal species. Both aspects are important to nature enthusiasts: the vulnerability of the habitat and its role in supporting threatened species.

The cadastral area also belongs to the Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site. This protected area includes the main channel of the Danube and the floodplain forests on its left bank. Natural aquatic habitats include rivers and marshes, which provide suitable breeding conditions for waterbirds such as little bitterns, common terns, garganeys and redshanks. The comparison also concerns scale: Mostové identifies the location of the salt meadows, while Dunajské luhy is the larger protected area to which the cadastral area belongs.

Church, manor house and pumping station

The Calvinist church in Veľké Kosihy was built in 1819 in the neoclassical style. On two sides of its interior are wooden Protestant galleries, or raised platforms within the church. This arrangement is a specific feature of the interior, in addition to the neoclassical style. The church continues to serve its religious purpose and is considered to be well preserved. Around 1830, Károly Zámory had a neoclassical manor house built next to the church. Both buildings share the same style, but differ in type and date of construction: the manor house was built about a decade after the church.

The local technical history is also connected with water management. The old pumping station was built into the Danube embankment in 1856 and formed part of the drainage system of Žitný ostrov. The smaller, single-storey building housing the steam pumping station has not been operational since 1965. Its location within the Danube embankment and its role in the drainage system illustrate two aspects of the same technical task: structural integration and water drainage. The construction history can be set out chronologically: the church was built in 1819, followed by the manor house around 1830, and the pumping station was added in 1856. Together, the church, manor house and pumping station represent religious, estate and engineering architecture.

More recent local development

In the centre, the old bus stop was replaced as part of a modernisation project. A 100 m² multifunctional outdoor sports area was officially opened on 16 October 2021 as part of the Day of Sport and Health. When it was opened, the “Jungle Street Workout” sports park included an inclined bench, vertical and horizontal ladders, a low pull-up bar, low parallel bars, sloping parallel bars and a two-section high pull-up bar.
