Kameničná combines protected wetlands and lowland nature with historic buildings. When planning a stay, these features can be considered separately: Vrbina, Lohótsky močiar and Dropie represent different landscape and birdlife themes; Konkoly offers a natural body of water, while churches, a manor house and a monument tell the story of the area. Cycling is another option.

Kameničná belongs to the Podunajský turistický región tourist region, which is classified as nationally significant.

Wetlands and birdlife

Vrbina, a wetland and nature reserve that is home to almost 100 bird species, lies within the cadastral area of Kameničná. The area is an example of willow-poplar floodplain forest with a well-developed shrub and herb layer. The wetland formed as an old meander of the Váh gradually silted up. Biodiversity, vegetation and its development from an old river meander are all part of what defines this area.

Lohótsky močiar is also a nature reserve, but is associated with a different body of water: it is an old meander of the Vážsky Dunaj that is at an advanced stage of silting up. At the same time, the area is a breeding site for several species of waterbirds. Compared with Vrbina, the focus here is on the advanced silting and waterbird breeding sites; Vrbina is characterized by its almost 100 bird species and its formation from an old Váh meander.

The Dropie protected area extends across the cadastral areas of Kameničná, Zemianska Olča and Čalovec. For several years, it has been a major wintering ground for great bustards. Together, these areas offer different nature themes: Vrbina is associated with diverse birdlife, Lohótsky močiar with waterbird breeding sites, and Dropie with the great bustard’s wintering grounds.

Water and cycling

Konkoly offers a natural body of water with a beach and grassy areas for sunbathing. Its main features are different from those of the wetlands: the body of water, beach and grassy areas shape what it has to offer. Fishing is also possible at the Konkoly-Akácos fishing spot in Kameničná.

The flat lowland terrain and relatively light traffic on local roads make the area suitable for cycling. Traffic conditions can change, so check the current conditions on local roads before setting out on a cycling trip. The terrain and traffic are the two specific factors to consider when planning a cycling trip in Kameničná.

Churches, manor house and monument

The Reformed Church is a late Gothic building dating from the 15th to 16th centuries and retains its original star vault. The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross offers a different style: it is a Neoclassical building from the mid-19th century that has been altered several times. Kameničná thus has two churches from different periods, each with its own architectural history: late Gothic architecture with a star vault and a Neoclassical building whose history has been shaped by several alterations.

The manor house also tells a story of two building phases. It was originally built as a Baroque building in the second half of the 18th century; in the first half of the 19th century, it was remodelled in the Neoclassical style. The sequence of its Baroque construction and Neoclassical remodelling reflects changing styles over time in a single building.

The monument to the victims of the Second World War stands between the Reformed and Catholic churches. It was unveiled in 1965. Its location between the two churches and the year it was unveiled give the monument a distinct place in the area’s history.
