Bodzianske Lúky: Landscape and Sacred History
Accommodation in Bodzianske Lúky
You can explore Bodzianske Lúky from two distinct perspectives: the landscape of Žitný ostrov and the sacred buildings in Bogyarét. Its location in the Danubian Lowland provides the geographical setting, while the church, wayside shrine, and crosses point to a local religious history. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you narrow down your choice of destination: would you prefer to focus more on the landscape or on the history of the local buildings?
Landscape and Getting There
Bogyarét is located on Žitný ostrov in the Danubian Lowland. The cadastral territory of Bogyarét lies within the Ostrovné lúky Special Protection Area, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. The roads to Bogyarét run directly through this bird protection area. This makes the protected-area connection relevant both for understanding the location and for getting there.
The bird protection area itself can be reached from the south via road I/63 Bratislava–Komárno and from the east via road II/573 Komárno–Kolárovo. When planning your route, keep your specific destination in mind: the roads to Bogyarét run through Ostrovné lúky; the two roads mentioned indicate how to reach the protected area. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
The Roman Catholic church in Bogyarét was built following a specific initiative: in 1889, Vince Vermes had it constructed as a simple church on his own land. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and was restored in 1998. Several aspects of the local history are therefore clear: a named builder, an exact year of construction, the dedication, and a later restoration.
The restoration of the church in 1998 should be distinguished from the entries concerning smaller sacred monuments. An inventory also compiled in 1998 noted that these required restoration.
Wayside Shrine, Crucifix, and Roadside Cross
A wayside shrine stands immediately to the right of the church entrance. In the cemetery next to the Roman Catholic church, there is a sandstone crucifix with its back facing the church. The inventory compiled in 1998 noted that both required restoration. Another roadside cross stands outside the center of Bogyarét, in a field near a group of farm buildings; the 1998 inventory also described this monument as needing restoration.
A local tradition is associated with the wayside shrine: according to local accounts, its niche once contained a statue of Saint Joseph. The roadside cross is also linked to an earlier religious practice. In the past, a procession would go to this cross during the Rogation Days. The two accounts thus distinguish a possible former furnishing of the shrine from a communal procession in the past.
Birdlife of Ostrovné lúky
Nature offers another focus here. The habitat of Ostrovné lúky is suitable for the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor) and the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). Whether you spot either species depends on the season and is not guaranteed.
