Discover Komárno: Fortress, culture and thermal baths
Accommodation in Komárno
Komárno combines fortress history with architecture, museums, thermal baths and nature escapes along the Váh. The differences between these attractions are concrete—from guided-tour requirements to seasonal pool offerings.
Fortress and cycling route
Pevnosť Komárno is part of the most extensive fortress system in Central Europe, which spans the Slovak Republic and Hungary. The oldest part of the fortress is called Stará pevnosť. It was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. Two historical periods therefore meet here: the site of the medieval castle and the construction of the oldest part of the fortress in the 16th century.
For safety reasons, Pevnosť Komárno can only be visited as part of a guided tour. In winter, tours depend on the weather. Plan your visit as a guided tour; if visiting in winter, take the weather dependency into account.
The EuroVelo 6 cycle route runs along the fortress. This provides a clear thematic connection for travellers who want to combine cycling and fortress history in their itinerary.
Architecture and museum
Nádvorie Európy showcases characteristic features of architecture from 36 European countries and regions in one place. The various architectural influences can be compared directly there.
Podunajské múzeum has exhibitions and displays in three buildings in the centre of Komárno. The museum also includes a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments in Bastion No. 6 of the fortress system on the outskirts of Komárno. The museum buildings in the centre and the lapidarium on the outskirts therefore offer distinct points of interest for a cultural itinerary.
Squares, monuments and building history
Námestie generála Klapku is dominated by a statue of György Klapka, a figure in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49. The Marian Column of the Holy Trinity, also called Súsošie Najsvätejšej Trojice or Trojičný stĺp, dates from 1715. It commemorates the plague epidemic of 1710–1711 and the end of the Kuruc Wars. Construction work on Kostol sv. Ondreja lasted from 1723 to 1763.
Thermal baths with seasonal and year-round pools
In summer, visitors to Termálne kúpalisko Komárno can enjoy a 2.5-hectare complex with seven different pools. The baths also have a Finnish sauna with a capacity of up to 20 people. An outdoor pool is open year-round; its retractable roof can be partly opened or closed.
When planning a visit to the baths, it is worth noting the difference between the complex with seven pools available in summer and the outdoor pool that can be used year-round. The retractable roof is a distinct feature of this pool.
Nature escapes and routes along the Váh
Mŕtve rameno Váhu, located on the Váh, offers opportunities to enjoy nature. Designated picnic areas are available at the site. Cycling, inline skating and running routes run around Mŕtve rameno Váhu and the Váh. This gives you a choice when planning your day between taking a break at the picnic areas and getting active on the various routes.
