Accommodation in Pribeta
The Dr. Ernő Mátyás Educational Trail is a self-guided circular route in Pribeta. Historic churches, the Ethnographic Collection and protected natural areas add a range of cultural and landscape themes to the walk.
Nature and Landscape
On the southwestern edge of Pribeta lies Pribetský háj, which was designated a protected area in 2002. The designation protects 69 genetically valuable downy oaks (Quercus pubescens). Another natural area is located near the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, outside the built-up area of Pribeta. Protected pedunculate oaks, autumn crocuses, pheasant’s eyes and other protected plants can be found there.
There are also bee-eater (Merops apiaster) nesting tunnels in the area around Pribeta. The nesting sites are seasonally sensitive. Alongside protected plants and oaks, birdwatching is therefore another nature-related activity in the surrounding area.
Trail and Itinerary Planning
The Dr. Ernő Mátyás Educational Trail is a circular route that can be walked year-round. It starts at the primary school in Pribeta and is self-guided. The route is 11 km long, has an elevation gain of 65 m and includes seven stops; walking time is approximately four hours.
The duration gives an approximate time frame, while the distance indicates the length of the circuit. Both figures help with planning your day without reducing the walk to a single number. The trail focuses on history, culture and natural sciences.
Ethnographic Collection
From everyday life in the past and wartime experiences to holidays, the Ethnographic Collection spans personal life and community occasions. Visitors can be guided through the collection by its founders, Jakab Katalin and Szabó Edit. It is advisable to arrange a guided visit in advance.
The collection is housed in part of the former Catholic primary school building, which was renovated in 2008. The building and the collection offer different historical points of reference: the building’s former use as a school and the collection’s present-day focus on the life stories of Pribeta.
Churches and Architectural History
The Holy Trinity Parish Church in Pribeta is late Baroque and was rebuilt at its present location in 1733. Its main altarpiece dates from around 1770. The building’s history and the altarpiece provide two points of reference for dating the church.
The Reformed Church was built between 1784 and 1786 as a towerless toleration church; its tower was added in 1841. Inside are three wooden Protestant galleries and a Neoclassical pulpit with a sounding board. The building thus shows both its original towerless form and the later addition of the tower.
Chapel and Wine-Growing History
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in 1762 on the site of a hermitage. A modern Calvary group surrounds the chapel. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Before visiting, check its condition on site and local visitor access.
Part of Pribeta’s southern hilly area is suitable for wine growing; vineyards have been mentioned there since 1720. This historical trace adds a reference to the cultural landscape to the architectural history of the churches.
