Lipové: Lowland, Nature and History
Accommodation in Lipové
Lipové combines a flat lowland landscape with a young settlement history and distinctive buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Lipové, you can first consider whether nature, cycling or the history of the municipality will shape your stay. The local landscape and cultural features offer different starting points for this.
Landscape and Canals
Lipové lies in the Žitný ostrov plain, in a flat lowland area at 105 to 109 metres above sea level. The cadastral area is treeless, flat and covers 1,058 hectares. A comparatively dense network of canals runs through the area and is one of the landscape’s defining features.
Geologically, the area consists of gravel and sand from the “kolárovskej formácie” and layers of fluvial Danube deposits. There are also alluvial and floodplain soils, which are locally saline. Together with the small difference in elevation, these features create a distinctive lowland landscape that differs clearly from a wooded or hilly setting.
Ostrovné lúky and Its Habitats
The cadastral area of Lipové is part of the Ostrovné lúky Natura 2000 site. This open lowland habitat is of great importance for the breeding and survival of the red-footed falcon. The steppe, forest-steppe and agricultural landscape also provides suitable living conditions for the lesser grey shrike and the short-toed lark. Ostrovné lúky is therefore notable both for its open landscape and for the bird species found there. If you plan to visit the area, check the visitor rules currently in force beforehand.
Cycling and Getting There
The flat terrain and comparatively low traffic on local roads make Lipové very well suited to cycling tourism. The canal-crossed landscape is also suitable for rural tourism. These features can help you decide whether Lipové is right for you if, when planning your trip, you are considering a quiet lowland landscape and activities in the surrounding region.
There are two nearby reference points for getting there: the nearest railway station is in Zemianska Olča, about five kilometres away, on line 131 between Bratislava, Dunajská Streda and Komárno. The nearest bus stop for long-distance buses is in Tôň, also about five kilometres away. Check the timetables for your specific journey.
Settlement History and Buildings
Lipové was established after the 1920 land reform under the name Hodžovo. Settlers from across Slovakia founded the settlement. The Evangelical bell tower in Lipové was built in the 1920s, making it part of the same period as the settlement’s early history.
The older architectural heritage includes the Kálnokyovská kúria and its associated barn on the Terem farmstead. Both were built in the 19th century, but the complex has fallen into serious disrepair. Double houses and the barns standing beside them in Rakotáš are also typical of Lipové’s architecture. Access to individual buildings may be restricted.
Special Places and Local Events
The Bodza–Lipové oxbow, also known as Zsemlekes, is one of the most valuable tourist sites in Lipové. If you are considering a visit, check locally whether access is possible and under what conditions. Within the cadastral area, immediately next to the municipality of Zemianska Olča, a former gravel pit has been converted into the CARP PARADISE fishing water for recreational fishing. Before visiting or fishing, check access and current conditions directly with the operator.
The annual calendar in Lipové includes celebrations for Mother’s Day. Together with the settlement’s history, the bell tower and the buildings in Rakotáš and on the Terem farmstead, they offer another glimpse of the municipality’s local character.
