Accommodation in Svätý Peter
If you’re looking for a hotel in Svätý Peter, you can plan your trip around the things that interest you: viticulture, landscapes or local history. The municipality combines a varied landscape with a long-standing wine tradition and churches dating from different periods. The history of the Zichy manor house also offers a distinct historical focus.
Landscape and Viticulture
The municipal area includes floodplain and flood soils, sandy loess terraces and hilly landscapes with extensive sand dunes. There are also arable land, vineyards and acacia forests; fertile fields predominate in the south. Different types of landscape and the area’s agricultural character are both defining features of the municipality.
A plane tree stands in the park. It was planted to mark the birth of a daughter in the Zichy family. Today, the tree is protected as a natural monument. It brings together natural and local history: its planting is linked to the Zichy family, and it remains protected to this day.
Vineyards in Svätý Peter are documented in writing from 1715. Svätopeterský rizling is considered the best-known varietal wine from the municipality’s vineyards. The wine-growing landscape also has an architectural dimension: wine cellars and wine-press houses are located in two areas. In Nové Vinohrady, they line the cellar road towards Komárno; in Strážny Vrch, they line the cellar road towards Madar. More than 200 wine cellars are still in active use in the municipality today.
St Peter Vini offers a specific visitor experience. The company offers wines from its own production, stored in barrels in its own wine cellar, which visitors can tour. Tastings take place in the wine cellar’s large dome. Arrange your visit and tasting with St Peter Vini in advance.
Churches and Local History
The first written mention of Svätý Peter dates from 1332 and is associated with the consecration of a parish and a church dedicated to Saint Peter. The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul is Baroque and was built in 1730 on the site of a Gothic church. The severe earthquake of 1763 badly damaged the Catholic church. Count Miklós Zichy arranged for it to be restored and commissioned decorative windows, which are still visible today.
The Reformed Protestant church has a different architectural style: it is Neoclassical and was built in 1784 as a Tolerance Church. A Lutheran church was also built in Svätý Peter in 1956. The years 1730, 1784 and 1956 mark different phases in the local history of the churches.
The Zichy family manor house is also associated with several historical functions. During military unrest, it served as the county house, where county assemblies were held. During the Revolution of 1848–1849, it housed György Klapka and János Damjanich; afterwards, the building was used as a military hospital. On 12 May 2026, the Slovak Ministry of Culture reported that the building was in inadequate technical condition. If you plan to visit the manor house, check its current condition in advance.
The local history also includes a family crypt in Svätý Peter. The remains of Countess Fábryová, her husband and their six-year-old son were buried there.
