Marcelová – Churches, Archery and Nature Reserves
Accommodation in Marcelová
Marcelová brings together church architecture, historical archery culture and two nature reserves. These offer different starting points for planning a trip: you can focus on architectural history, the work of the Fekete Sólyom association or the areas covered by the nature reserves. If you are looking for a hotel in Marcelová, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
Churches and architectural history
The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist dates from 1731. The Reformed Church was built in 1803 as a Neoclassical Tolerance church without a tower; a tower was added in 1836, and the church was restored in 1906. The history of the two churches offers different points of reference: the Baroque style is the main focus at St. John the Baptist, while the Reformed Church reflects development across several construction phases. There were 33 years between the construction of the Reformed Church in 1803 and the addition of its tower in 1836; a further 70 years passed before its restoration in 1906.
The local cultural landscape also includes the chapel above the “miraculous spring” in the former park of the Pálffy family.
Historical archery and culture
The historical archery association Fekete Sólyom, also known as Čierny Sokol, has been based in Marcelová since 2006. It shares the culture and martial customs of ancient Hungarian and Avar archers through historical clothing and equipment. If you are interested in taking part, contact the association directly.
At historical festivals at home and abroad, the association performs dynamic archery demonstrations. Its focus brings together archery and the presentation of historical clothing and customs. Cultural celebrations are also held in Marcelová; their programmes may vary.
Two nature reserves
The Marcelovské Piesky Nature Reserve covers 4.5 hectares and is located in the cadastral area of Krátke Kesy. The Pohrebište Nature Reserve covers 69.3 hectares and is located in the cadastral area of Marcelová. At around 15 times the area, Pohrebište is considerably larger. The different cadastral areas provide another way to distinguish between the two nature reserves. To compare their sizes, 4.5 hectares is equivalent to 45,000 square metres and 69.3 hectares to 693,000 square metres.
Getting around and planning your trip
Marcelová lies on the road between Komárno and Štúrovo. Roads from Chotín, Šrobárová and Virt also lead to Marcelová. If you plan your journey around one of these road connections, check the exact route in advance using an up-to-date map.
When planning, it is worth distinguishing between architectural and natural features and activities that depend on specific dates: churches and nature reserve areas are permanent features of the town, while participation in the association, demonstrations and cultural celebrations are tied to specific dates. If such an activity is the reason for your trip, arrange your participation or check the event date directly in advance.
