Kráľová Lehota lies at the foot of the Low Tatras, in the eastern part of the Liptovská kotlina basin. The Biely Váh and Čierny Váh rivers meet here. Important roads from the east, south and west intersect below the village. The river and road connections thus provide two different points of reference for navigating the landscape.

Landscape and Surroundings

The underlying geology also varies with the landscape: the wooded valleys in the surrounding area lie on shale and sandstone, while the rocky mountain ridges lie on limestone and dolomite. Turková is also located nearby, on the right-hand side of the lower reservoir of the Čierny Váh pumped-storage power plant. Turková is designated as a protected area.

History of the Village

Kráľová Lehota was founded between the late 13th and early 14th centuries by royal servants tasked with guarding forests and hunting grounds. The village developed into a settlement of the lesser nobility; by the end of the 16th century, it had twelve kúrie, or manor houses.

The location by waterways and transport routes also shaped the village’s historical orientation. In those days, travellers heading to the Bocianka and Čierny Váh valleys had to pass through the settlement. This should be distinguished from today’s road connections: the documented intersection of important roads lies below the village.

Church and Manor House

The evangelical church stands in the central part of Kráľová Lehota and is one of the village’s important cultural monuments. It is Neo-Gothic and was built to replace a wooden place of worship dating from 1784, which had been destroyed by fire. The construction is dated to the period from 1886 to 1894; 1884 is also cited as a possible starting year.

Another important cultural monument is the Zemianska kúria of the Lehotský family. Together, the church and manor house represent two distinct aspects of the architectural heritage: a place of worship and a kúria, which recalls the historical status of the lesser nobility in the village.

Traditions and Historic Work

A long-standing Fašiangy tradition takes place on the last Saturday of Carnival: a masked procession moves through the village singing. At the Fašiangy evening dance that follows, the double bass is symbolically buried—as a sign that Lent is beginning. The two customs combine a procession through the village with a ritual marking the transition into Lent.

The former use of water power is also part of the village’s history. On the Váh and the Bocianka and Hybica streams, it enabled the operation of mills, sawmills, tanneries, fulling mills and hammer mills. The former Považská Forest Railway is another part of the region’s industrial history. It was one of the longest forest railways in Slovakia. Construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1940; from 1932, it also carried passengers between Liptovský Hrádok and Teplička.

Routes Through Upper Liptov

The cycling route through Upper Liptov runs from Liptovský Hrádok via Kráľová Lehota and Čierny Váh to Štrba and Važec, then back to Liptovský Hrádok. It is suitable for road bikes; the section to Štrba runs through forests in the valley of the Čierny Váh river.

Another route described as Cestou Liptovského sna runs from Liptovský Hrádok via Kráľová Lehota, Svarín and Čierny Váh to Benkovo. The Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina is planned as the penultimate stop before the route returns to Liptovský Hrádok. Visit Liptov’s Route 11 passes through Kráľová Lehota and connects Podtureň, Borová Sihoť, Liptovská Porúbka, Svarín, Čierny Váh, Maša, Hrádocký hrad and Liptovský Hrádok. Before setting out, it is best to check the current conditions for the cycling route and the other route descriptions.
