This guide to Benice focuses on three specific topics: its location by the water, cycling routes, and the history of local seals and heraldic representations. If you are looking for a hotel in Benice, you will find location-specific points of interest here to help plan your trip.

Benice between the river and cycling routes

Benice is a district of Liptovský Mikuláš and lies where the Váh flows into the Liptovská Mara reservoir. This places the town in the landscape where the river meets the reservoir. Another connection with nature and the landscape can be found near Liptovský Mikuláš: in Lesopark Háj-Nicovô, a nature and landscape trail provides information about local nature and fossils from the time when Liptov was covered by a sea, up to 45 million years ago. For your planning, the town’s location and the nature theme can be considered separately: Benice is associated with the confluence, while the trail is associated with Liptov’s geological past.

MTB Route No. 17, “Okolo Liptovskej Mary,” runs from Liptovský Mikuláš through Benice and returns to Liptovský Mikuláš via other towns and along the shore of the Liptovská Mara reservoir. A cycling route along the reservoir is considered suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. Route No. 17 can be identified by its route through Benice, while the lakeshore route is distinguished by the types of bikes suited to it. Before setting out, check the MTB route signage and local conditions on the lakeshore route.

Seals and local history

The Benickovci were the noble owners of Benice. The text “OBEC BENICE” has been preserved from seal impressions dating to the second half of the 19th century, but the seal image has not. The original seal matrix is held in the collections of the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok. An oval seal of Benice was made in 1885 and bears the three-line Hungarian inscription “LIPTÓ MEGYE BENICZ KŐZSÉG PECSÉTJE 1885”. Those interested in local history will find specific details here: a preserved text, a historical seal matrix, and an oval seal dated 1885.

Coat of arms design and flag

The coat of arms design of Benice is based on a variant of the coat of arms of the noble Benickovci family. The design shows a silver dove with outstretched wings standing on a golden crown and holding a green palm branch in its beak, set against a red shield. The description of the design draws attention to the image and its colors, while also connecting it with the name of the Benickovci.

The flag of Benice has six horizontal stripes in red, white, red, green, white, and yellow, and an aspect ratio of 2:3. Its end is swallow-tailed, with two notches extending one-third of the flag’s length. The coat of arms design and flag can thus be distinguished by their different design elements: the image on the shield in one case, and the specified stripe sequence and shape of the end in the other.
