Liptovské Kľačany lies at the entrance to the Kľačianska Valley. Hiking trails, walks in the surrounding forests, cycling tours and the historic church are the main features that shape the choice of destination. Outdoors, there are different types of routes to choose from: as well as easy walks, there is a hike through the valley and marked routes to named mountains and terrain landmarks. You can first decide whether you are looking for easy forest walks, a tour through the valley or a climb to a specific high point.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

The forests around Liptovské Kľačany offer numerous easy walks. A hiking trail leads from the Kľačianska Valley to Magurka; you can also hike through the valley. A climb via Brestovec leads to Ľupčianska Magura at 1,315 metres. Two marked trails can be compared by their stages: one leads from Tajch via Magurka to the Latiborská hoľa saddle. The second starts in the settlement of Železnô, leads via Magurka and Mount Mestská hora, at 1,520 metres, to the main ridge below Malý Chabenec. Magurka is therefore a shared intermediate point on these two route descriptions; they also differ in their starting and ending points.

The N2401 – Vlkolínec – Pribylina educational cycling route passes through Liptovské Kľačany. There is also a cycling route junction at the entrance to the village. This makes it possible to distinguish between the named through-route and the local navigation point. Check route markings and conditions before setting out; trail conditions for hikes may vary seasonally.

Landscape and Nature Conservation

Most of Liptovské Kľačany lies below the summit of Chabenec, within the protected area of Low Tatras National Park. The Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site covers the cadastral area of Liptovské Kľačany. This protected area is characterised mainly by coniferous forest habitats, complemented by meadows and pastures. Forest bird species protected in the area include the golden eagle, hazel grouse, capercaillie, three-toed woodpecker, boreal owl, Eurasian pygmy owl and hazel grouse. Protected habitats and forest birds offer a second perspective on nature to complement the orientation provided by hiking destinations.

Church and Local History

The present-day Church of Saint Elizabeth stands on the site of a Gothic church dating from 1339. It was built in the historicist style between 1878 and 1889. Two Baroque paintings from the mid-18th century and a late-Baroque tabernacle with cherubim have been preserved in the church. The dates place the building’s history in three periods: the Gothic predecessor, the Baroque works and the present-day church from the late 19th century.

Remains of partisan bunkers can also be found in the Kľačianska Valley. If you plan to visit these historic traces, check locally whether the remains are currently visible.
