There are several ways to plan a trip to Vazec: Važecká Cave, folk culture and the Omilienci Pentecost tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Vazec, you can first decide whether natural history, local culture or a particular event date will shape your plans.

Natural Monument and Cave Research

A 235-metre section of the route in Važecká Cave is open to the public. The cave is one of Slovakia’s national natural monuments and an important palaeontological site for cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) bones. It therefore combines a specific visitor route with scientific significance: the publicly accessible route describes one part of the visit, while the cave bear bones illustrate the site’s palaeontological importance.

Omilienci: Pentecost Tradition in Važec

The Svätodušný chorovod Omilienci is an archaic ritual procession of dance and song held every Pentecost Sunday in Važec. Today’s procession starts at the upper end of the village below the cemetery and ends in the square in front of the church. The finale includes a performance and the symbolic opening of springs. Women who wish to wear traditional dress and sing can take part in the procession. If Omilienci is important to your trip, check the specific event date before planning your stay.

Folk Culture and Everyday Life

The Múzeum ľudovej kultúry Važec presents everyday life and housing, traditional clothing, agricultural work, folk crafts, and the customs and traditions of the inhabitants of Važec. It is housed in one of the oldest brick houses in the village. The way of life on display is therefore directly connected to the historic building that houses the museum.

The exhibits include a model of Važec showing the village as it looked before it was destroyed by fire. Another exhibit, dating from 1781, features original decoration and the bride’s name. The model draws attention to the former village, while the dated exhibit is a single item bearing a personal inscription.

Church and Jan Hála

In the Church of Klaňania sa troch kráľov in Važec, a Gothic portal leads from the nave to the adjoining sacristy, which is now used as a confessional. The portal is said to have come from the former church in Šoldov.

Jan Hála’s house is a national cultural monument, built in 1923. It was the painter’s home when he came to Važec.

The War Cemetery Outside the Municipality

The German war cemetery near Važec lies outside the municipality between Važec and Tatranská Štrba. The way in is signposted and leads to a large car park at the site. A circular path connects eight cemeteries. Check the specific conditions at the site before travelling.
