Maluzina combines a setting in the mountain landscape of the Nízke Tatry with traces of mining, glassmaking and speleology. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different visitor offerings: the cave involves a guided tour underground, the exhibition displays objects related to mining and speleology, and the adit and the route through Malužinská dolina are separate destinations for excursions.

Landscape and Location

Maluzina lies in the eastern part of the Liptovská kotlina basin on the northern slopes of the Nízke Tatry. The Ohnište plateau, designated a national nature reserve, is located west of the village. Malužinská jaskyňa is also situated above Maluzina: it lies on the left side of the Bocianska dolina valley and formed in dolomite rock. These places and landscape features offer different points of reference for your planning, without requiring you to combine a cave visit, the nature reserve and the valley route into a single excursion.

Mining, Glassworks and Building History

Maluzina originated in the second half of the 18th century as a mining settlement around a copper hammer mill established in 1771. A glassworks also operated here from the 18th century until 1885. These two facts refer to different historic industries in the village. Another date marks the building’s history: the Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross dates from 1816. The historic heritage also includes a former inn with a bowling alley from the early 19th century, which is a national cultural monument. “Former” describes the inn’s earlier use; the heritage designation applies to the building.

Cave and Exhibition

Malužinská jaskyňa is approximately 328 metres long, of which 250 metres are open to the public. The visit begins with an uphill walk of about ten minutes. This is followed by a guided tour underground, with helmets and headlamps. Take the incline and physical demands into account when planning your visit. The length figures distinguish between the cave’s approximate total length and the section open to the public.

An exhibition on mining and speleology is housed in the main building of Speleocamping Malužiná, right next to the reception. Objects on display include miners’ lamps, minerals and ores extracted from mines. The guided tour of the exhibition takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes; the duration may vary. Its format therefore differs from the cave visit, which includes the uphill approach and the guided underground tour.

Adit, Tickets and Routes

The Baňa Zubaustollen adit is located at the beginning of Malužinská dolina. It is just under two kilometres on foot from the Speleocamping reception to the adit. Advance reservations by phone or email are recommended for visits. Tickets for the cave, the adit or the exhibition can be purchased at the Speleocamping reception at Malužiná 21. Visitor parking is located in front of the buffet at Malužiná 158, about ten metres from the reception. Since ticketing, parking and reservation arrangements may change, it is best to confirm these details before your visit.

Another route option, “Chorupné cez Malužinský Tajch,” follows forest paths through Malužinská dolina to Malužinský Tajch and onward to Chorupné, before returning to Maluzina. It therefore differs from the route to the adit: the walk from reception to the adit is just under two kilometres, while this route includes several named stops and a return to Maluzina.

When choosing between the offerings, the itinerary and subject matter provide clear guidance: the cave combines an uphill approach with a guided tour underground; the exhibition offers a brief insight through specific objects; the adit has its own route and a recommendation to reserve in advance. The valley route follows forest paths to the named stops and back. This allows you to plan your trip around your interest in caves, mining history or a route through the landscape.
