Ižipovce lies in the central part of the Liptov Basin, below the Choč Mountains, at an altitude of 598 m. The surrounding area combines the Prosečné protected area, hiking trails and valleys with nearby Liptovská Mara. When planning your trip, you can focus on a hike, distinctive geological formations or activities on the water. The routes described also differ in their starting points, distances and stated durations, so choosing the right one depends on the specific route.

Location and natural environment

The Prosečné Site of European Importance includes the cadastral area of Ižipovce. The landscape of the protected area is shaped by limestone and dolomite bedrock and a characteristic rocky ridge relief. Its distinctive natural features include the deep gorges of the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys. The Prosiecka Valley is close to Ižipovce and can also be reached on foot from there. The information relates to different geographical areas: the altitude refers to Ižipovce, while the geological features belong to the Prosečné protected area. To get a sense of the landscape of Prosečné, you can distinguish two features: limestone and dolomite bedrock with rocky ridges, and deep valleys as prominent landforms.

Hiking: trails and durations

A 4,294 m-long hiking route named Janošíkov stôl passes through Ižipovce. Markings and trail conditions can change, so check the current conditions before setting out. The circular hike to Jánošíkov stôl (Čerenová skala) starts in Liptovská Anna and is over 8 km long. It includes 459 m of ascent and the same amount of descent; the stated duration is three hours. The hike is considered an easy alpine hike, although the climb is also described as relatively steep. There are occasional views of Liptovská Mara through the trees. Another hike runs through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys from Prosiek to Kvačany; its stated duration is six hours. On this route, more difficult sections in the lower and upper parts of the Prosiecka Valley are tackled with the aid of technical equipment. The time required differs considerably: six hours for the valley route compared with three hours for the circular hike.

Cave and local history

A distinctive natural feature directly above the village is Jaskyňa nad Ižipovcami. This 20 m-long limestone cave is located in the cadastral area of Ižipovce, is of fluviokarst origin and contains archaeological finds. Historical livelihoods and crafts in Ižipovce included farming, cloth weaving, blacksmithing, carpentry and the making of handričkové korovce.

Activities at Liptovská Mara

The Liptovská Mara reservoir is near Ižipovce. Swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips are available in the surrounding area. This makes it quite different from the valley hikes: water activities are the focus at Mara, while the gorges of Prosiecka and Kvačianska make them popular hiking destinations. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip between excursions on foot and activities on the water.
