Veľké Borové offers a range of experiences for a stay: natural features, a hike with views, and historic religious and mill buildings. You can shape your trip around the landscape, outdoor activities and architectural history.

Nature and views around Veľké Borové

At the entrance to the Prosiecka Valley, near Veľké Borové, there is a natural grassy depression formed by erosion. During spring rains and snowmelt, it can fill almost to the brim with water and drain again within 15 to 20 minutes. The phenomenon is seasonal and weather-dependent. Another natural feature is Ráztocký Waterfall: it plunges about eight metres into a rocky gorge and is accessible from Veľké Borové. After severe weather events, check access locally.

The Súšava observation tower combines an unusual construction history with views of the surrounding landscapes. In fact, it is a rebuilt transformer station designed in the style of traditional folk architecture. From the tower’s gallery, you can see the Roháče, Skorušinské vrchy and Chočské vrchy mountain ranges, as well as the Oravská pahorkatina upland. Its distinctive architecture and several named viewpoints make Súšava a different experience from the natural features on the valley floor.

Hiking trails and practical information

The circular route to the Súšava observation tower is considered an easy hike. It is 3.1 kilometres long, with 160 metres of ascent and 160 metres of descent, and is listed as taking 1.05 hours. These figures help you estimate the time required; they may change if trail conditions or mapping are updated. By contrast, the educational trail at the southern end of Veľké Borové passes through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys. Its twelve stops cover geographical, biological and historical topics. The two routes therefore have different points of focus: the Súšava route gives you a sense of the distance and elevation gain, while the educational trail offers themed stops through the valleys.

There is a local restaurant in Veľké Borové along the route through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys, offering refreshments. Before your trip, check whether it will be available during your visit.

Religious buildings and mills

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (“Kostol Povýšenia sv. Kríža”) in Veľké Borové was built in 1823 in the Neoclassical style on the site of an older wooden religious building. Its interior includes wall paintings from the 1940s, including “Oplakávanie Krista” and depictions of the four Evangelists. It also contains a late Baroque altar of the Holy Family from the first half of the 18th century, as well as a baptismal font from the late 18th century. The church is still used for religious purposes and is considered to be well preserved. As its condition may change, it is advisable to confirm it before your trip.

Another religious building in the village is a small Neoclassical structure from the 19th century. Its statues depict John the Baptist and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Together, these buildings show different aspects of the local religious history, from the church with its older predecessor to the statues in the smaller Neoclassical building.

In the nearby settlement of Oblazy, the municipality of Veľké Borové built the so-called “brunčiakovská” Lower Water Mill. In the nearby Kvačianska Gorge, the watermills of Oblazy are part of the educational trail through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys. The reconstructed saw can be viewed at the Lower Water Mill. If you plan to visit, it is advisable to check current visiting arrangements in advance.
