When looking for a hotel in Vyšná Boca, it is worth first considering the kind of stay you have in mind: mining history, traditional architecture, hiking trails and a seasonal ski resort offer different ways to experience the area.

Mining History and Architecture

At Banícky dom, the exhibition presents the traditional way of life and living conditions of a mining family. The house retains its original historic furnishings; the back room houses an exhibition on the mining history of the area around Vyšná Boca. Demonstrations of the traditional method of transporting hay, known as Bocké batohy, are planned for the summer. As this programme is seasonal, check before your trip whether a date is available.

Vyšná Boca has been mentioned as a royal mining town since 1551. The Evangelical church also tells the story of the village: built in 1785 in the Classicist style as a Toleration church, it stands on the site of a religious building dating from the late 16th century. Its interior features include a wooden ceiling and galleries on three sides.

Traditional architecture extends beyond individual buildings. Houses in Vyšná Boca and Nižná Boca, built in the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, have a distinctive floor plan developed from the principle of dividing a space into three parts. Here, that principle provided the basis for an expanded plan. Both municipalities also had a form of meadow farming. This includes protected hay barns and stable buildings, which give the area its distinctive character.

Trails, Nature and Winter Sports

Vyšná Boca lies in the buffer zone of the Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT). Together with Nižná Boca and Malužiná, it forms part of the 16-kilometre-long Bocianska Valley. This geographical setting adds a landscape perspective to the area’s cultural history, without conflating its different hiking options.

The Zlatnica educational trail is accessible year-round and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. It is 12 kilometres long and has 11 information stops. This gives you a clear idea of its length; no walking or cycling time is specified for the trail.

At 14 kilometres, the Bacúch–Vyšná Boca educational trail is longer and is rated moderate. The route has an elevation gain of 690 metres and takes approximately five and a half hours. Its five information boards cover nature conservation, history and mining. Individual boards may be replaced or relocated. When planning this route, both the stated duration and elevation gain are useful, while trail conditions may vary by season.

The hike to Rovná hoľa starts in the mining settlement of Vyšná Boca, below Čertovica. Trail conditions and signage may change. Bocianske sedlo is a junction of hiking trails, including the yellow-marked route from Vyšná Boca to Králička and onward to Chata generála Milana Rastislava Štefánika, below Ďumbier. The shelter at Bocianske sedlo offers protection in rain or thunderstorms and is close to a frequently used ridge trail. Check its condition and suitability locally.

The Bačova Roveň ski resort is located within the municipality of Vyšná Boca and has groomed, artificially snowed pistes and night skiing. Operations are seasonal. Another point of interest is the Kyselka mineral spring: it emerges from a mine tunnel and supplies iron-rich mineral water with a sour taste.
