Veterná Poruba: History of the prayer house and theater tradition
Accommodation in Veterná Poruba
Veterná Poruba lies on the ridge of Mount Štefanka, in the central part of the Liptov Basin, at an altitude of 820 meters. The peaks of the Western Tatras rise north of the village. For planning your trip, the village offers two distinct points of interest: its architectural and theater history, and a ten-kilometer loop trail with panoramic views of several mountain ranges. If you are looking for a hotel in Veterná Poruba, you can first decide whether local history or Nordic walking will be the focus of your stay.
Buildings and historical traces
The bell tower, built in 1853 after the great fire of 1850, is considered the oldest surviving building. The Evangelical prayer house was built in 1873 on the site of a smaller wooden prayer house dating from 1862. This sequence brings together two distinct building phases: the bell tower dates from the period after the fire, while the later prayer house continued the history of an older wooden building on the same site.
The history of the prayer house is also reflected in its organ. In 1892, it received an organ from the Evangelical church in Jasenová. After being restored, the organ remains in use to this day. The prayer house also preserves a wooden statue of an archangel from the original church of Svätý Štefan. The organ and statue have different places of origin: Jasenová and the former church of Svätý Štefan.
A long tradition of amateur theater
Amateur theater in Veterná Poruba has a tradition spanning more than a hundred years, which continues to the present day. The first performance took place in 1918: “Eulália sa chce vydávať” by an unknown author. This gives the local theater history a definite starting point—a performance and a specific title—while the tradition continues to this day. For travelers interested in culture, amateur theater adds another dimension to the history of the buildings.
Loop trail and getting there
The ten-kilometer loop trail runs from Smrečany to Veterná Poruba and back, and is suitable for Nordic walking. Along the way, it offers panoramic views of the Western Tatras, the Low Tatras, and the Choč Mountains. At the five-kilometer mark, the route passes the lost settlement of Svätý Štefan. The village’s location and the hiking experience can be distinguished clearly: Veterná Poruba lies at an altitude of 820 meters, while the panoramic views of the three mountain regions are part of the loop trail.
