Jakubovany at Baranec
Accommodation in Jakubovany
Jakubovany lies below the 2,184 m summit of Baranec in the landscape of the Western Tatras National Park. Its location combines a strong connection to the mountains with options for excursions on foot and by bike, as well as seasonal winter activities. When choosing a hotel stay, it is therefore especially helpful to consider your planned travel dates and the focus of your days: a short waterfall walk and a long mountain route require very different timeframes.
Hiking between the waterfall and Baranec
A route over Baranec to Žiarska dolina starts in Jakubovany; a walking time of 9 hours is indicated. Access in the mountains may vary by season. Check the conditions before setting out if you plan to take this longer route. A designated loop leads from Studená dolina to Jakuboviansky Vodopád and back; a walking time of 1 hour is indicated. Water levels and trail conditions may vary; take both into account when planning. The stated times highlight the difference between the two types of outing: the waterfall loop is a short hiking option, while the Baranec route takes up a large part of the day. The Jakubovany–Baranec educational trail is 8.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 1,470 m. Its length and elevation gain show that distance and ascent should be considered separately when planning. The educational trail is located in Tatranský národný park (Tatra National Park).
Cycling and winter trails
A cycling route leads from Jakubovany into Račkova dolina. It can then be continued via the Tatranská magistrála to the mouth of Žiarska dolina. In winter, cross-country ski trails start in Jakubovany or lead into the village. They can connect to the Tatranská magistrála in the direction of Žiarska dolina and Račkova dolina. Whether the trails are usable depends on snow conditions. The nearby Bane ski area has a 500 m-long ski lift; its operation is seasonal.
Historic traces and sheep-herding traditions
On Vysoký Hrádok above Jakubovany are remains that are probably associated with a Celtic settlement. Later, Vysoký Hrádok served as a watch post on the trade route from the Spiš region. In Studená dolina, visitors can observe traditional sheep herding and sheep milking. They can also taste and buy sheep’s milk products. These offerings depend on the season and the providers’ activities; check the conditions for your planned visit.
Choose your stay to suit your plans
If you are considering Jakubovany as a destination for a hotel stay, you can plan your travel dates around your preferred activities. The stated walking times for hikes range from one hour for the loop to Jakuboviansky Vodopád to 9 hours for the route over Baranec to Žiarska dolina. Cycling and winter activities are also options; for cross-country skiing and the Bane ski area, snow conditions and seasonal operation respectively should be taken into account. This lets you decide which activity you want to shape your stay before searching for a hotel.
