When planning a trip to Partizanska Lupca, you can choose your destination based on its local history, church architecture and landscape. The heritage zone offers a concrete starting point: its urban layout dates back to a medieval settlement with a central square. More recent historic building structures and green spaces have partly altered the layout.

Heritage Zone and Churches

The landscape shaped by the Ľupčianka influenced the design of the heritage zone’s urban structure and transport links. The square, buildings and landscape therefore form a cohesive townscape. Many buildings retain authentic historic façades and interiors, with valuable craft details and artistic decoration. So, alongside the town plan, it is worth taking a closer look at the design of individual buildings.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Matthew stands in the square. It was built in the last third of the 13th century. In the 16th century, a fortified defensive wall with loopholes was added, and the tower was also modified. A former guardroom and a narrow balcony that runs around the tower have also been preserved at the church. Its history thus brings together its medieval origins and later structural changes.

The Church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows offers a different architectural accent. It was built in 1263 on the northern edge of Partizanska Lupca. A Gothic entrance to the sacristy and an original Gothic portal on the south side, with mouldings in the jamb, have been preserved. The two churches therefore stand out for different details: the defensive wall and modified tower at St. Matthew’s, and the Gothic features at the Church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows.

The market tradition is also part of the town’s history: it is one of the oldest in the Liptov region. Alongside the medieval town plan and churches, it offers another perspective on the town’s cultural heritage.

Landscape and Trails

A blue-marked hiking trail begins at the southern end of Partizanska Lupca. This southern part of town is called Biela Ľupča. If you are planning a hike, check the trail markings and conditions before setting out, as they can change.

Another connection between landscape and history is Magurka, a former mining settlement at an altitude of 1,080 metres in the Ľupčianska Valley of the Low Tatras. It lies below the peaks of Latiborská hoľa (1,648 m), Ďurková (1,749 m) and Chabenec (1,955 m). Chabenec is the highest of these three peaks. Gold mining in the area around Magurka began around 1250. Here, high-altitude landscapes meet a long history of mining.

The D1 motorway is about 3 km north of Partizanska Lupca.
