Svätý Kríž offers two distinct themes to help plan your trip: historic buildings and cycling routes. Its churches and manor house represent different architectural histories, while named routes pass through or lead into the village.

Churches and architectural history

The Evangelical articulated church of Svätý Kríž is one of the largest wooden buildings in Central Europe. Its exceptional size makes it a notable attraction for anyone interested in historic wooden architecture.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Povýšenia sv. Kríža) also has a layered architectural history. It was remodeled in the neoclassical style in 1819, partly using the masonry of an earlier Gothic church. That church had been destroyed in the early 18th century. Inside is a Neo-Gothic copy of the main altar in Kežmarok. This sequence brings together the Gothic predecessor, the 1819 remodeling and a Neo-Gothic furnishing.

Village character and craft traditions

The neoclassical Kúria Rudolfa Turanského manor house dates from the 19th century. It offers another point of reference for the architectural history of Svätý Kríž, this time outside the churches mentioned above. If you would like to put the different periods in context, you can compare the manor house’s date with the 1819 remodeling of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The village is also characterized by a linear settlement pattern along a stream. This means that the focus is not only on the history of individual buildings: the layout of the settlement is also part of finding your way around Svätý Kríž. Craft traditions represent another aspect of the village’s history. As recently as the mid-20th century, Svätý Kríž was known for making shepherds’ implements and weaving rag rugs.

Cycling around Svätý Kríž

The “Around Liptovska Mara” MTB loop passes through Svätý Kríž. It is 58 kilometres long, is rated difficulty level 4 and has a stated duration of eight hours. It runs along lightly trafficked second- and third-class roads, as well as paved and unpaved country roads. It is primarily suitable for mountain bikes and e-bikes. As road and trail conditions can change, check current conditions before setting out.

Another named cycling route, “Vlkolínec – Pribylina,” leads to nearby Svätý Kríž, home to the largest articulated wooden church in Central Europe. The two routes therefore have different points of reference: the loop focuses on distance, difficulty and duration, while the “Vlkolínec – Pribylina” route leads into the village.

Getting there and practical information

Svätý Kríž has a direct bus connection to Liptovský Mikuláš. Check the timetable before travelling so you can plan around the connection. There is a small car park a few metres from the Evangelical articulated church. As parking availability can change, check the current situation before you set off.

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Svätý Kríž, first decide what matters most to you: church architecture, the MTB loop or the bus connection. When comparing specific hotel offers, then check the location, amenities and booking details provided for each one.
