The municipality of Nižná Boca lies in the Low Tatras National Park. Nižná Boca also belongs to the cadastral areas of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site. Two very different hikes and a mining heritage closely connected with the area can help guide your travel planning.

Hiking on Zlatnica and to Rovná hoľa

The Zlatnica nature trail runs between Nižná Boca and Vyšná Boca. Along its approximately 8 km route are 11 information boards; the trail is estimated to take about three hours. It focuses on the mining history and culture of the surrounding area. The route passes through the localities of Pod Oleškovou, V Kiari, V Kúte, Geplovô, Ochimstál and Pri mlyne. It is accessible year-round and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. After major weather events, it is advisable to check the trail’s condition; maintenance or route changes may also affect the information provided.

The hike to Rovná hoľa starts in Nižná Boca and covers 15.8 km. The stated duration is about four and a half hours, with an ascent of 872 metres. From Nižná Boca, the route follows a yellow-marked trail and reaches a spring in the saddle of the Črchľa valley. Along the way, there are views in every direction, especially of the Western Tatras and the High Tatras; visibility depends on the weather. Trail markings and water availability may vary seasonally. Before setting out, also check the trail conditions and any possible detours.

For planning purposes, the approximately three hours on Zlatnica can be compared with around four and a half hours on Rovná hoľa; the stated distances also differ, at 8 and 15.8 km. These key details give you a concrete comparison without reducing either hike to the same kind of experience.

Mining history and traditional architecture

Part of Nižná Boca is designated as a protected heritage zone of folk architecture. The oldest surviving house in the village dates from 1710, bears house number 130 and is locally known as Od Jakobusky. Miners’ log houses from the 18th and 19th centuries have also been preserved. Their passageways and shingle-covered hipped roofs reveal specific features of the area’s historic architecture.

Mining in the Bocas in earlier times included around 100 adits and spoil heaps, as well as numerous prospecting trenches, pits, subsidence areas and mining roads, testifying to its scale and importance at the time. A unique system of meadow barns was also characteristic of the Bocka Valley. This system of meadow management is considered a rarity in what is now Slovakia. The Zlatnica nature trail explores the mining history and culture of the surrounding area, offering another way to learn about these topics.
