Dúbrava – Nature and mining history
Accommodation in Dúbrava
If you are looking for a hotel in Dúbrava, you can choose where to stay based on your specific interests: the municipality combines natural surroundings, mining history and sacred architecture. Traditional customs and an educational trail further complete the picture of the place.
Landscape and natural surroundings
The Low Tatras shape the municipality’s natural surroundings and cover almost two-thirds of its territory. On the main ridge, Chabenec reaches 1,955 metres above sea level at the southern municipal boundary. The Dúbravka is the largest watercourse flowing through Dúbrava’s cadastral area. Dúbrava is also part of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site. The mountains, river and protected-area designation offer different points of reference for understanding the municipality’s landscape.
Mining history and architecture
Banícka faleska serves as a memorial space where historical artefacts from Dúbrava’s mining heyday are on display. The space opened in 2023. The story of the Predpekelná section gives a concrete picture of mining work: eight miners from Dúbrava mined antimony ore there. They blasted the ore with black powder and carried it to the surface in wooden troughs. This brings both the extraction and transportation of the ore to life.
The Church of St Andrew the Apostle (Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola) dates back to the 13th century. It was remodelled and fortified in the Renaissance style in the 17th century; remnants of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved inside. The building therefore bears several distinct historical traces: the medieval church, its later Renaissance remodelling and the remains of Gothic paintings in the interior.
Trails, customs and events
The Náučný chodník Banícka cesta is an easy 6.3-kilometre educational and walking trail. It starts at Štátne majetky in Dúbrava. Check local trail conditions before setting out. Five information boards stand along the trail through Dúbravská dolina.
Old traditional customs included carrying the Murieny out of the village before Easter and drowning them in water. Other customs passed down through the generations include carrying out the Dedko, St John’s fires and further customs before Christmas.
The annual Deň baníckej obce Dúbrava was held on 14 September 2024. At that edition, visitors could enjoy goulash, food and drink stalls, as well as craft stalls. The children’s group of FSk Chabenec also performs folklore programmes at events in Dúbrava and outside the municipality. If you are hoping to see one of these programmes, check the dates of the relevant events.
