Popeşti-Leordeni offers several very different points of interest for a stay: an archaeological site near Leordeni, the history of an Orthodox church, a monastery on the border with Bucharest, a war memorial, and a centrally located park. Balta Floarea Popeștilor is another point of interest. Visitors who want to understand the destination in its cultural context can distinguish between archaeological traces, sacred architectural history, remembrance, and open space.

Archaeological Site near Leordeni

The Popești Leordeni – Conacul Costaforu archaeological site lies on the eastern edge of Leordeni, on the right bank of the Dâmbovița and on a high terrace. It includes a Bronze Age settlement of the Tei culture as well as the ruins of a 19th-century manor house. Two clearly distinct periods therefore meet within the same site: a Bronze Age settlement and the remains of a manor house from a later century. The location describes the site as concretely as its history does: Leordeni, the riverbank, and the terrace form its geographical setting. For travelers interested in archaeology or architectural history, this contrast is a particularly striking highlight.

Church History in Leordeni

The Orthodox Biserica Sfinții Voievozi is located in Leordeni. The great boyar Mihail Manu had it built in 1807–1808; it was consecrated on March 26, 1811, Palm Sunday. Several years thus passed between its construction and consecration. The founders’ portraits are on the west wall of the narthex; Nicolae Polcovnicul painted them in oil on canvas in 1825, and the canvas was affixed to the wall. The date of the portraits comes after the construction and consecration period, so several stages in the church’s history can be distinguished. The artist, year, and painting technique are as specific points of reference as the name of the patron.

Monastery and Memorial

The “Duminica Sfinților Români” Monastery was built between 2003 and 2006 and founded by Teoctist, the Romanian Patriarch. It lies on the border between Bucharest and Popeşti-Leordeni. Its construction period and location provide two distinct geographical and historical points of reference. The monument to the heroes who fell in the First World War strikes a different note: its column bears the inscription “Eroilor din Popești-Leordeni comuna recunoscătoare”; two marble plaques on the sides list the names of the heroes. Alongside religious architectural history, remembrance of the fallen thus emerges as a distinct focus.

Park and Body of Water

Parcul Erou Garian Alexandru is located in the heart of Popeşti-Leordeni and covers more than 6,000 square meters. Its location and size make it a central point of reference in the town. A local description from 2019 identifies Balta Floarea Popeștilor as a body of water for sport fishing in Popeşti-Leordeni. The body of water is reported to cover 5 hectares and have a depth of 1 to 6 meters. If these measurements are important for a specific fishing plan, check them again beforehand; also find out about the current sport-fishing conditions before making plans.
