Østfold stretches along the eastern side of the Oslofjord, from Moss to the Swedish border. Coastal and island experiences, fortified towns and cycling routes give the region its varied character. When planning your trip, you can focus on whichever of these aspects interests you most.

Coast, islands and trails

Ytre Hvaler National Park covers 354 km² of coastline and archipelago. It is Norway’s first marine national park; 96 percent of its area lies underwater. A network of trails invites you to go hiking, including the Kyststien coastal trail. Kayaking trips are also possible in or near the national park. Experiences by the sea are at the heart of a visit to the Hvaler Islands.

On Søndre Jeløy, Galleri F 15 is located at Alby Manor, in the heart of the local landscape protection area. Also on Søndre Jeløy, Naturhuset is an information and interpretation centre for natural conditions and cultural history. Alby Kafé serves freshly baked pastries, including the famous Albykringla; the selection may vary.

Østfold by bike

The 350-kilometre Unionsleden runs from Moss in Østfold to Karlstad in Värmland, Sweden. Two routes pass through Indre Østfold. The Great Østfold Bike Tour can be approached in different ways: as a relaxed multi-day trip with stops and overnight stays, or as a shorter sporting challenge.

If you want cycling to be a central part of your stay, you can use these routes to help plan your trip. The Unionsleden connects two regions along a long route, with two routes passing through Indre Østfold. The Great Østfold Bike Tour, meanwhile, offers a choice between a multi-day ride with overnight stays and a shorter sporting challenge.

Fortified towns and history

Gamlebyen was founded in 1567 by King Frederik II and is now considered the best-preserved fortified town in the Nordic region. It is also home to Scandinavia’s largest model railway exhibition. Fredrikstad is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Northern Europe. A free city ferry offers a river trip from the city centre to the historic old town of Gamlebyen. Check the latest operating details before travelling.

In Halden, Fredriksten Fortress represents more than 350 years of living history. The exhibitions at the Fredriksten Museum cover the period from the 1640s through 1905. The Halden Canal also tells the story of the region: it is Norway’s oldest canal with locks, opened in 1849, and is located in Østfold and Akershus.

Activities and special attractions

At the Brekke locks, the Via Ferrata Haldenkanalen includes a 124.3-metre suspension bridge 15 metres above the Halden Canal, a climbing course and a 250-metre zipline. Seasonal operating details may change; check them before visiting. Canoes can also be rented at the locks. As availability may change, it is worth checking in advance.

At the INSPIRIA Science Center in Sarpsborg, visitors can experience, explore and learn about the world of science. Also in Sarpsborg is Bjørnstadskipet: this rock carving measures 4.5 metres and is the largest vertical rock carving in the Nordic region.

Choose the right focus for your stay

When choosing a hotel in Østfold, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: the island coast and national park on Hvaler, cycling on the region’s routes, or the history of the towns and fortresses in Fredrikstad and Halden. Søndre Jeløy adds art, nature interpretation and pastries at Alby Kafé to the mix.
