Moss: Trails, Coast and Industrial History
Accommodation in Moss
In Moss, coastal landscapes, trails and industrial history come together. When planning your stay, you can choose different focuses: natural areas, historic sites, trails or activities by the water. Each has specific points of interest, from Søndre Jeløy and Mosseskogen to Møllebyen and Vansjø.
Coastal Landscapes and Trails
The Søndre Jeløy landscape protection area covers about 4.5 km² and was established in 1983. The Kyststien runs through the area. On the eastern side of Mossesundet are the natural areas of Molbekk, Røysåsen and Kulpe; both the Kyststien and the Pilegrimsleden run through the area. This gives you several named starting points in Moss for trails through protected and natural landscapes. One of the best-preserved sections of the historic Fredrikshaldske Kongevei also runs through Mosseskogen.
Moss’s beaches include Sjøbadet and Tronvikstranda, which have been awarded the Blue Flag. Since certification status can change from year to year, it’s best to check before your visit. This gives you both specific beach names and useful up-to-date information to keep in mind for a stay by the water.
Hiking, Cycling and a Short Riverside Walk
The Vansjøstien starts at Mossefossen and is suitable for both hiking and cycling. Mossefossen is also the starting point for an approximately 800-metre riverside walk: it runs from Nesparken along the waterfall to Verket. This short walking route is easy to distinguish from the much longer Unionsleden cycling route.
Unionsleden is 350 kilometres long and starts in the heart of Moss at Konventionsgården and Mossefossen. Moss railway station is a convenient starting point for the route. If you plan to travel by train, check current connections separately. This lets you coordinate your travel plans with your chosen route and how you’ll get there, without assuming a particular connection.
Industrial History and Historic Sites
The Moss city and industrial museum is located in Møllebyen, next to Mossefossen, in an old mill building. Spread across two floors, it presents Moss’s industrial history through games, competitions and interactive activities. The site thus combines a historic subject with an engaging way of presenting it.
Another specific point of interest is Konventionsgården: the Convention of Moss was signed there on 14 August 1814. Unionsleden also starts at this site. If you’re interested in Moss’s history, you can include Konventionsgården as a historical focus in your plans; the cycling route offers a different perspective on travel planning.
Activities at Vansjø
At Vansjø, you can swim, paddle, go boating by motorboat and fish. For canoes and kayaks, there’s a specific place to go in Nesparken, near the centre of Moss: the Moss Kayak Club clubhouse is the closest place to rent these boats from Moss city centre. Check the rental terms before your trip. This keeps general activities on the lake clearly distinct from the specific rental option in Nesparken.
When looking for a hotel in Moss, you can first decide whether your trip will mainly focus on trails and nature, industrial history or activities by the water. This helps you align your choice with your travel plans.
