Sarpsfossen is a landmark of Sarpsborg and Scandinavia’s most powerful waterfall by volume. Rock carvings and burial mounds in the cultural landscape also tell stories of times long past. Archaeological Traces and Cultural Heritage

Hafslundparken is home to burial mounds from the Iron Age and rock carvings that are more than 3,000 years old. The Borgleden pilgrimage route also runs through the park. The Borgarsyssel Museum is the regional museum of Østfold County and covers a broad range of the region’s cultural heritage. Other archaeological sites each have their own features. Opstadfeltet includes around 150 burial sites, standing stones, and four stone settings; traces of ancient paths are also visible. Bjørnstadskipet is a ship-shaped rock carving with 48 crew lines. On the grounds of Kalnes videregående skole, Kalnesfeltet features rock carvings of ships and animals, as well as cup marks. Together, these sites offer a chance to see a variety of motifs and forms of prehistoric rock art.

Parks, Swimming Spots, and Seasonal Slopes

The central Kulåsparken offers paths, children’s playgrounds, and a large amphitheater used for concerts and other events. Tunevannet also has a family-friendly beach with a diving tower, swimming pier, barbecue facilities, toilets, and a kiosk. For winter sports, Kjerringåsen Alpinsenter offers five runs and a vertical drop of 130 meters. Storedal and the Route from the Center

The one-way route from the center of Sarpsborg to Storedal is 9 km long. It runs mainly along pedestrian and cycle paths and roads with little car traffic. Storedal Kultursenter is located in the scenic hiking area and cultural landscape of Storedal in Skjeberg, in the municipality of Sarpsborg. The route provides a practical point of reference for planning if Storedal is part of your itinerary; it connects different types of paths.

The cultural center features the sound sculpture “Ode til lyset” by Arnold Haukeland, with music by Arne Nordheim, an open-air amphitheater, and a sensory garden with more than 200 plants. The sound sculpture and garden offer distinct experiences, while the amphitheater adds an outdoor venue to the site. A visit to Storedal can thus combine art with the surrounding cultural landscape.

A Broader Look at Østfold
