In Rømskog, cultural history, marked trails and activities on the water come together. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would most like to visit historic sites, go hiking or spend time by the water. The different destinations offer a range of ways to explore the area.

Cultural history in Rømskog

The Haukenestårnet in Rømskog is one of only two surviving wooden fire lookout towers in Norway. Kurøen is also an important cultural landmark: this farm is a combined open-air museum and cultural centre, with a history dating back to 1599. Kurøen was designated the millennium site of the former municipality of Rømskog. Together, this special historic structure and a place with a long farm history offer ways to learn about the region.

Marked trails and hiking areas

The Tukuelva cultural trail is a 5 km marked route along a river near the centre of Rømskog. The marked 1814 Trail also runs near the centre and offers some facilities. Both trails are an option to include in your local itinerary; the Tukuelva cultural trail also has a specified length and follows the river. The Strandene Turvei is another marked hiking trail. Abortjern is designated as a hiking area and bathing spot.

At Haukenesfjellet and Slavasshøgda, there are marked hiking trails, a DNT cabin, Østfold’s highest point and an old fire lookout tower. The cabin at Haukenestårnet is on Grensesømmen, the route from Halden to Treriksrøysa, on Haukenesfjellet. Trails lead into the Hølvannet Nature Reserve, a nature reserve and bird area. These places offer different focal points for your plans: marked hikes, a cabin, or nature and birdwatching.

Waterways, cycling and outdoor activities

At Rømsjøen and in the “Rømsjøen rundt” area, there are bathing spots, fishing opportunities and shelters. “Rømsjøen rundt” also has a marked cycling route around the lake. So if you would like to plan a bike ride, you will find a designated route here; bathing and fishing opportunities, as well as shelters, round out the activities by the water.

Kurøen bygdetun also offers bathing spots, a jetty, canoe rental and sand volleyball courts. Seasonal operating conditions may apply to these facilities; check what is currently available before you visit. Vortungen is a recreational area with a body of water for fishing, swimming, ice skating and paddling. These activities depend on the season and local conditions. The differences between the locations can help you plan your day: Rømsjøen also offers cycling and shelters, while Vortungen additionally offers ice skating and paddling.

Cabins and getting there

A 2023 municipal inventory lists one cabin with food service each at Langemåsahytta and Lukashytta, as well as a hiking trail and a ski slope. Check before travelling whether food service is currently available. This helps you plan a visit to these cabins without assuming that they are currently open.

Public transport to Rømskog is very limited; travelling by car is recommended. Check available connections before your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Rømskog, first decide which of the destination’s features is most important for your stay: cultural sites, marked trails or activities by the water. You should also take the specific travel arrangements and seasonal offerings into account when planning.
