Culture and history in Rakkestad
From Rakkestad, first drive about one kilometre northeast towards Lundskrysset. At Lien, turn left and follow Küenveien for about three kilometres to Kaaen Sag og Mølle. The industrial monument by the Dørja River has been preserved and partially restored; it stands on the site of an old mill. Its riverside location and former use as a mill give the place its industrial character.
Rakkestad kirke is about three kilometres south of the centre and is the main church of the municipality. The Romanesque medieval stone church has a rectangular nave and a narrower, elongated chancel; it was probably built around 1200. Its approximate date is part of its history, as is the clear distinction between the nave and chancel.
Rakkestad bygdetun is around 500 metres north of the centre. It combines a museum with a working museum farm, used for celebrations, fairs, school and club events, and anniversaries. As an open-air museum, it comprises eleven buildings arranged like a farm typical of those in Ăstfold in the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection includes approximately 3,000 museum objects, among them Frederick IIâs Bible from 1588. The church south of the centre and the Bygdetun to the north therefore offer different points of reference for finding the cultural sites.
Hjemmefrontmuseet Rakkestad was opened by Crown Prince Harald in 1983. It displays around 4,000 items from the Second World War, including uniforms and various weapons. For a thematic comparison of the museums, the focus is on rural cultural history at the Bygdetun and the history of the Second World War at Hjemmefrontmuseet.
Sports and seasonal experiences
Rakkestadhallen is in the centre of Rakkestad and has a cycling track, a basketball court and a beach volleyball court. There is also a disc golf course next to the hall, which is free to use and open to everyone. Before your trip, check the availability of the hallâs facilities and the current conditions at the disc golf course.
Several times during the summer, Storgata in Rakkestad becomes a market street. Local food, handicrafts and commercial goods are on offer there. As this is a seasonal tradition, check the specific market dates before your visit.
Hiking and excursions in the wider Rakkestad destination
Rakkestadfjella is the largest continuous hiking area in the municipality of Rakkestad. It has just over 80 kilometres of marked summer trails and about 70 kilometres of ski trails; the forest areas continue into corresponding areas in Marker and Eidsberg. The summer trails and ski trails are suited to different seasons, making the hiking area an interesting option when planning a stay outside summer as well.
Near Høgnipen are the Rørmyr I and II and Mellommyr hunting sites, which are among the oldest in Norway. A marked route leads from Ilgutusaga via Erthevannsveien to the archaeological sites. Check the markings and access locally. Linnekleppen also has a specific route description: from the car park on National Road 124, a marked 3.5-kilometre trail with a steady incline leads to the wooded ridge. Linnekleppen is 325 metres high and has a fire lookout tower; on a clear day, the view extends to Gaustadtoppen. Trail conditions can vary, and you should check the status of the tower before your trip.
Fishing is possible in many lakes in Rakkestadfjella; fishing permits can be purchased at most access points. Check the regulations in advance. The wider Rakkestad destination also includes the built heritage site Sandbekk Mølle in Degernes. It was built in 1904 and has now been restored. Its distinctive overshot waterwheel has an external diameter of 430 centimetresâa specific detail that gives an idea of the scale of this historic mill.
