Marker: Fortresses, Locks and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Marker
Basmo Fortress stands on a hill between Rødenessjøen and Hemnessjøen. A trip to Marker can take in the history of fortresses and churches, canal engineering, industrial heritage and cycling routes.
Fortresses and Cultural History
Basmo Fortress was built in the late 17th century as part of the Oplandske fortifications on the road between Stockholm and Christiania. Today, the site is an important cultural monument that has been restored and is being preserved for the future. Here, the history of a fortress and its lasting significance as cultural heritage come together.
The Ørje forts were built in 1902–1903 as part of the border fortifications against Sweden. A marked nature and cultural trail runs between the defensive structures. A marked path to Nordre Fort starts at the E18 above the canal bridge. Check the condition of the paths before setting out.
The medieval Rødenes Church also offers a historical connection: it is believed to have been built in the first half of the 13th century. Each year, Rødenes IL organizes the Flyktningemarsjen. It starts at Skogstad farm in Rødenes and follows two escape routes: one leads towards Sweden, while the other returns to the starting point. Event dates may vary from year to year; check the date for your travel year.
Locks and Industrial Heritage
The Ørje locks have a total difference in elevation of ten metres and are still operated by hand, as they have been since opening in 1860. Ørje Brug is an authentic industrial site dating from the late 19th century. A wood pulp mill operated there from 1886 to 1942. Most of the buildings have been preserved, and restoration work has been carried out continuously in recent years. Together, the locks and the mill complex showcase different facets of Marker’s technological and industrial history.
Cycling and Experiences
Two cycling routes offer different ways to explore the area: the historic Unionsleden runs from Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden, passing through Marker. National Cycle Route No. 9 runs through the municipalities of Marker and Aremark. Before setting out, check the route and signage for your chosen ride. The 350-kilometre Unionsleden runs along two routes through Indre Østfold.
Ørje is a starting point for boat trips, cycling tours and paddling experiences on the Halden Canal. Available activities and providers may vary seasonally. Ørje is also home to SOOTspelet, a performance staged each summer; dates and production details may vary.
For activities, dining, accommodation and experiences, Marker’s tourist information office directs visitors to Visit Indre Østfold. If needed, check whether this link is up to date.
