Otteid – Timber Trade, Canal and Stora Lee
Accommodation in Otteid
Otteid combines a long history of trade with opportunities at Stora Lee. For centuries, the town was a central transshipment point for timber between Sweden and Norway. The Otteid Canal, surviving traces of timber transportation and the bathing area at Østre Otteid offer different starting points for planning a trip. If you are looking for hotels in Otteid, you can first consider whether local history, time by the water or both are important to you.
Timber Trade, Canal and Border Control
The Otteid Canal was excavated from 1825 to 1827. The area around Skinnarbutjernet was also dammed during this work. The canal was in operation from 1827 to 1956. Both the canal’s construction history and its long period of operation are therefore part of Otteid’s historical story.
The former Otteid customs station offers another perspective on cross-border trade. Built specifically for this purpose, the customs station dates from the early 20th century and was used to control cross-border domestic trade with Sweden. It is regarded as a significant example of sectoral and cultural history. While Otteid’s timber transshipment describes its role in the movement of goods, the customs station represents the control of trade at the border. In Marker, Basmo Fortress is another historical point of interest: the fortress was built in the late 17th century as part of the Oplandske fortifications along the road between Stockholm and Christiania.
Surviving Traces Along the Otteid Canal
Walls of the canal still stand at Østre and Vestre Otteid. At Vestre Otteid, the Kjerrat, a timber-transport installation, is also partly preserved. The Otteid Canal and the Kjerrat were designated cultural heritage sites by the municipality of Marker in 1997. In addition, the Otteid Canal area is designated as a special conservation area. Together, the surviving walls and the Kjerrat show different examples of the built heritage associated with the canal and timber transportation.
Swimming and Paddling at Stora Lee
Østre Otteid is a bathing area on the freshwater lake Stora Lee. The outdoor recreation area is located at Otteidvika and is set up for both swimming and small-boat tourism. The bathing area and facilities for small boats are therefore part of the same outdoor recreation area.
Short and long canoe and kayak trips are possible on Stora Lee in the vicinity of Otteid. From Stora Lee, paddlers can continue on to the Dalsland Canal. These paddling opportunities differ from the bathing area at Østre Otteid: they are on the lake in the surrounding area, and the route can continue as far as the Dalsland Canal.
The Otteid Trail is also useful when planning a trip: it runs in the area around the Otteid Canal and has three routes of different lengths. If you plan to include it, check the latest route and access information in advance. The different route lengths provide a practical basis for comparing your options.
