Rakkestad appeals to travelers with a range of interests: Rakkestadfjella offers hiking trails and winter ski trails, Høgnipen is home to archaeological trapping sites, and historic buildings tell the story of the area. When planning your trip, it is worth considering seasonal activities, cultural heritage and travel arrangements separately.

Hiking, skiing and views

Rakkestadfjella is Rakkestad’s largest continuous hiking area. It has more than 80 kilometers of marked summer trails and approximately 70 kilometers of ski trails. Hiking and skiing are different, seasonal options for spending time outdoors; trail conditions can change with the seasons. Check conditions before your trip.

A marked, 3.5-kilometer trail leads to Linnekleppen from the parking lot on National Road 124. The route has a steady incline. Linnekleppen is a 325-meter-high, wooded ridge with a fire lookout tower. On a clear day, the view extends as far as Gaustadtoppen. Since you should check the tower’s status before traveling, do not count on being able to access the viewpoint.

Fishing is another option in Rakkestadfjella: fishing is available at many lakes. Fishing permits can be purchased at most access roads. Check the arrangements in advance before setting out for a lake.

Archaeological sites and trails

The trapping sites Rørmyr I and II and Mellommyr are located at Høgnipen. They are among the oldest trapping sites in Norway. A marked route leads from Ilgutusaga via Erthevannsveien to the archaeological sites. Check the markings and access on site before planning your route.

Another hiking trail, Ingaleden, passes through the Suteren area.

Museums, churches and mills

Rakkestad Bygdetun is an open-air museum with eleven buildings. They are arranged like a farm typical of those found in Østfold in the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum’s collection includes approximately 3,000 objects, including Frederick II’s Bible from 1588. The historic farmstead and the collection offer two different perspectives: one on an earlier farming environment and the other on individual artifacts from local history.

The Hjemmefrontmuseet in Rakkestad displays around 4,000 exhibits from the Second World War, including uniforms and various weapons. The exhibits on display may change. Rakkestad Church offers another perspective on history: the Romanesque medieval church has a rectangular nave and a narrower, elongated chancel. It was probably built around 1200.

Two mill sites showcase the area’s industrial heritage. Sandbekk Mølle in Degernes was built in 1904 and has now been restored. Its distinctive overshot waterwheel has an outside diameter of 430 centimeters. Kaaen Sag og Mølle is a preserved, partially restored industrial heritage site on the Dørja River, located at an old mill site.

Also in Degernes is Lillerudlund, a museum site of approximately eight decares with three buildings around an event space. Fargeriet på Fossnes was designated a cultural heritage site of Rakkestad in 1997, the year of cultural heritage. Visits can be arranged by contacting the owner, Iver Rustad. Gruva's Venner aims to preserve the municipality’s hundred-year mining history from 1880 to 1980 and prepare its historical values for presentation to the public.

Plan activities and travel

At Rudskogen Motorsenter, the go-kart track is available for commercial hire during normal opening hours. Since operating details may change, check the current schedule before visiting.

National Roads 111, 22 and 124 meet in Rakkestad. There are also bus connections to the towns and a few train services each day. Timetables may change; check current services before traveling.

If you are looking for a hotel in Rakkestad, first consider whether hiking trails, cultural heritage or an activity such as go-karting will shape your stay. Then match your choice to the specific location of the accommodation and your planned journey.
