Vápenice was established before 1740 as a Kopaničář settlement belonging to Starý Hrozenkov. The village brings together regional music and recurring customs with protected natural areas and activities nearby. This gives your stay several possible focuses: you can explore local customs, combine a hike with regional themes, or include winter sports in your plans.

Kopaničář History and Traditions

The men’s choir from Vápenice draws on the tradition of Hude music and a folk group that was once active in Vápenice. The choir’s repertoire consists mainly of songs from the Kopanice region. It performs at church dedication celebrations by the bell towers in Vápenice and Žítková.

A maypole is traditionally erected in April. In September, the Kopaničář village of Vápenice celebrates its church dedication; a mass is held at the bell in Vápenice that month. If you want to plan a trip around a particular celebration, check the specific event dates in advance. The maypole is in spring, while the church dedication and mass are in autumn—two different times of year to experience local customs.

Protected Landscapes Nearby

Two protected areas with distinct landscapes lie near Vápenice. Mravenčí louka (Rubaniska) covers 15.3 hectares and consists of original pastures, overgrown field margins, and scattered groups of shrubs and trees. Endangered plant species grow there, including several orchids and other rare plants. V Krátkých is characterized by flower-rich orchid meadows, wet meadows, and two ponds. The ponds are an important habitat for amphibians and aquatic insects, especially dragonflies.
