Břestek: Natural Monument, Hiking and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Břestek
Břestek is an interesting destination for travelers who want to focus their stay on wildlife watching, cycling or hiking. There are also a few distinctive architectural features. Depending on what you plan to do, these themes can guide your choice of where to stay.
Břestecká skála Natural Monument
Břestecká skála lies about 1.5 km northwest of Břestek. As a natural monument, it protects a significant geomorphological formation, with relict populations of Scots pine and original Carpathian oak-hornbeam woodland. Rare species also occur in the protected area, including the stag beetle, the white helleborine and the Cornelian cherry. The area is notable for both its distinctive landform and its woodland and biodiversity.
There is also a climbing sector at Břestecká skála, with routes that are mostly bouldering-style. If you are planning a climbing visit, check the restrictions and seasonal access beforehand. The route from Břestek to Břestecká skála follows the road toward Chabaně to a junction of red- and green-marked trails. Trail markings and access conditions may change.
Cycling and Hiking Around Břestek
Several cycling routes offer different reference points for planning a trip. Regional cycling route 5050 runs through Břestek along a 26 km stretch. Cycling route 5150, the “Velkomoravská poutní cesta,” also passes through the village and is considered suitable for all cyclists. Conditions and signage on routes 5050 and 5150 may change.
Cycling route 5159 runs from Buchlovice through Břestek to Břestecká skála. Its final unpaved section can be difficult in wet weather. The routes therefore differ in their practical features: for route 5050, the 26 km distance is relevant; route 5150 is generally suitable for cyclists; and route 5159 leads to the rock formation, with a note about its unpaved section.
The long-distance “Cyrilometodějská stezka” trail passes through Chabaně, a district of Břestek. In 2021, it was added to the Council of Europe’s list of Cultural Routes. Trail conditions and signage may change. The giant sequoia “Sekvojovec obrovský” also stands in Chabaně, offering another connection with nature in this district.
Other Experiences and Architectural Features
A takeoff meadow for balloon flights is located right next to Penzion BalonCentrum Břestek. Whether flights operate depends on operating conditions. This is a different focus from cycling or hiking and may be relevant when planning your stay.
The history of local buildings is another area of interest. A folk-architecture building in Břestek has a historic wine cellar dating from the 19th century. There is also an architecturally notable Neo-Gothic building in Břestek, dating from 1888. These features complement the nature and trail destinations with a glimpse of the local architecture.
