Stary Hrozenkov – Hiking Trails and Folklore
Accommodation in Stary Hrozenkov
Stary Hrozenkov is located in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve. There are several distinct options to consider for a stay: themed hiking trails, a long-distance cycling route, a natural area with a geological feature, and recurring music and folklore festivals. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether you would rather plan your stay around outdoor activities and scenery or a particular cultural event.
Hiking Trails and Nature
The Okolo Hrozenka nature trail is a 20-kilometre, moderately difficult hiking route. Its eight panels cover the life and culture of the Moravian Kopanice in the past and present. The Moravské Kopanice nature trail starts in the village square of Stary Hrozenkov and leads through the countryside around Žítková and Stary Hrozenkov. Its 14 stops introduce visitors to historical and natural sights, as well as particularly valuable plants and animals. The trails have different focuses: Okolo Hrozenka is devoted to the life and culture of the Moravian Kopanice, while Moravské Kopanice brings together history, nature, plants and animals.
The Beskydsko-karpatská magistrála long-distance cycling route also passes through Stary Hrozenkov. The Hrozenkovský lom, also known as lom Skala, offers a geological point of interest. It is the only place in the White Carpathians where columnar basalt joints can be observed. Alongside the nature trails, visitors can therefore choose a cycling route or a distinctive geological formation as another focus for their trip.
Festivals and Regional Traditions
The Kopaničárské slavnosti is a traditional folklore festival held every year in Stary Hrozenkov. The programme includes music, dance, cymbal music and other folk traditions. Another recurring musical event is the brass band festival, held annually in mid-June with participants from Moravia and Slovakia.
Recurring traditions in early September include Hody and harvest festivals. These feature a procession in traditional costumes through the village, where historic agricultural machinery and tools used by ancestors in their work in past centuries are displayed. The Hrozenkovské hody are also associated with displays of traditional products made by the Kopaničáři and products from local organic farmers. The vendors and products on show may vary.
Traditional costume is also part of the regional culture: the traditional costume of Stary Hrozenkov is distinguished by cross-stitch embroidery and is among the most interesting folk costumes in the Slovácko region. The annual pilgrimage celebration for the Nativity of the Virgin Mary takes place at the parish church on 8 September and is associated with Hody and harvest festivals. The exact programme may vary. If you are planning your stay around a festival, check the dates for your travel year before setting off.
Churches and Architectural History
The Church of the Virgin Mary in Stary Hrozenkov is a late Baroque cultural monument dating from 1774. The Chapel by the Pond dates from the 17th century. The two buildings offer different historical points of reference for a cultural and historical visit: the older chapel and the late Baroque church.
