Medlovice: Ceramics, Tradition and the Medlovický Quarry
Accommodation in Medlovice
Medlovice lies at the foot of the Chřiby Hills. The village offers several specific points of interest for a stay: local customs and memorial sites, handcrafted ceramics, and the geological exposure at the Medlovický Quarry. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you get a sense of the destination. This combination is particularly appealing to travelers who want to focus their stay on local history, regional crafts or geology.
Culture and Local History
A chapel dating from 1866 is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A monument to T. G. Masaryk was unveiled in Medlovice in 1930. In addition, a bust of Masaryk and a memorial plaque to those who fell in the war were reinstalled after the Second World War. Religious devotion, the commemoration of Masaryk and remembrance of the war thus stand side by side as distinct themes in the village’s history.
Local culture is also reflected in language, clothing and festive traditions. The Slovácko dialect is spoken in Medlovice; older women still wear clothing featuring elements of the Podhorácko folk costume. Local traditions include Slovácké hody on 16 October, the feast day of Saint Gall, and the Easter processions with ratchets, which are still maintained. The form of the hody rights preserves an element of tradition associated with Medlovice’s former affiliation with the Buchlov estate. A group in traditional costume took part in Slovácké hody s právem 2025.
Traditionally Handcrafted Ceramics
Medlovice has two pottery workshops that use traditional handcrafting methods. The Náplavovi Ceramics Workshop is considered worth visiting. It makes traditional functional ceramics entirely by hand on the potter’s wheel, including cups, bowls, teapots, canisters and jugs. This gives the theme of craftsmanship a tangible form: visitors can see a production method used to make a range of everyday items.
Visitors can choose ceramic products at both workshops. You may also be able to make a cup or vase yourself. Check whether this hands-on activity is currently available before your visit.
Medlovický Quarry and Cycling Routes
Another point of interest is the disused porcelainite quarry, Medlovický Quarry. It offers a unique complete exposure of porcelainites and is the only site of its kind in Moravia. The exposure contains red, violet, blue-grey and brown porcelainites across a thickness of five metres. This geological point of interest is clearly distinct from the village’s cultural themes: here, the focus is on the rock profile.
The quarry is accessible without restriction; by car, you can drive to within 250 metres of it. Check local conditions before you arrive. Cycling routes run through the area around Medlovice, including the Velkomoravská Pilgrimage Route of the Buchlov Microregion. The Slovácko cycling excursion route “Přes rozhledny na Hradisko sv. Klimenta” passes through Polešovice, Vážany, Medlovice, Vřesovice and Osvětimany. On this route, Medlovice lies between Vážany and Vřesovice.
