Šumice: Culture, Nature and History
Accommodation in Šumice
If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Šumice, the town offers several different points of interest: a museum exploring local life, historic buildings, a September tradition and natural landscapes. These themes can help you include culture and nature in your travel plans.
Everyday Life and History at the Šumické Museum
The Šumické Museum is located in the attic of a historic municipal building dating from the 1930s. Its collection comprises around 420 museum objects, displayed in three themed rooms: one is arranged like a traditional living room, another is a folk costume exhibition, and the third covers agriculture and crafts. The current exhibition focuses on the lives of Šumice residents, their folk costumes, crafts and leisure activities. In this way, insights into specific aspects of everyday life are paired with a broader look at life in the town.
Technical Heritage and Historic Houses
Pipalův mlýn is one of the cultural monuments of the Czech Republic and an important technical monument. Its machinery and technical equipment have been almost entirely preserved; the mill also contains objects from the lives of millers in the first half of the 20th century. Trchalíkova usedlost is an immovable cultural monument with a historic barn, a retirement house and a carriage shed. The property also includes a still-functioning horse-powered sweep for operating agricultural equipment and a working replica of a fruit-drying barn.
Other architectural styles add their own historical character: Hasoňova chalupa is a preserved smallholder’s house with ceiling beams dated to 1839. Šerkova usedlost is one of the oldest buildings in Šumice; its history is documented from 1777. Together, these examples represent different aspects of the town’s history—from technical installations and agricultural uses to older homes.
Šumické hody and the Fruit-Growing Tradition
Šumické hody lasts one day and is now held on the second Sunday in September. In the surrounding area, it is known as “dřinkové hody.” The fruit ripens around the time of hody; povidla were made and fruit was dried in Šumice. The festival date is therefore also connected with the seasonal processing of fruit. If hody is a deciding factor for your trip, check the date before making your plans.
Nature and Landscape
The Ovčírka area lies on the northern edge of Šumice and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Údolí Bánovského potoka area covers the cadastral territory of Šumice u Uherského Brodu. One of its most valuable parts is a xerothermic meadow with scattered wild pear trees and a belt of blackthorn scrub. The landscape thus includes not only a Natura 2000 site but also a habitat shaped by meadows, scattered trees and scrub.
Trails, Views and Getting There
The Putování po šumických pověstech route offers a viewpoint overlooking Šumice, Nezdenice and the 384-metre-high Babí hůrka hill. The section to Nivky is considered manageable for parents with small children and for seniors. Another marked route starts at Šumice railway station. A cycle path leads to Šumice; check the surface conditions before setting out.
The railway line between Veselí nad Moravou and the Vlárský průsmyk runs through Šumice. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date. Three ponds in Šumice are used for recreational fishing. If you’d like to take part, check the conditions in advance.
