Discover Buchlovice: Castle, Garden and Local History
Accommodation in Buchlovice
Buchlovice offers several cultural perspectives: Baroque castle architecture, historic garden design, local history and ecclesiastical heritage. The individual sights tell different parts of the story of the town and its surroundings.
Buchlovice Castle and its garden
Buchlovice Castle is one of the most important Baroque aristocratic residences in the Czech Republic and is regarded as one of the most significant and highest-quality examples of Moravian Baroque architecture. This assessment combines two measures: the importance of the residence in the country and its architectural standing in Moravia. The castle complex, with its park and garden, also has its own cultural and historical significance. It is one of the most important and best-preserved historic garden complexes in Bohemia and Moravia. Elements of an Italian Baroque garden have also been preserved in the historic garden.
The castle’s history also includes a political meeting: in 1908, a meeting between the Russian and Austro-Hungarian foreign ministers was held there under its auspices. This gives the castle a tangible connection to European history in addition to its architectural history. You can use the SmartGuide audio guide for a walk through the castle park. Insights at the Muzeum PodhradĂ
The Muzeum Podhradà is housed in a renovated building that formerly served as a manor threshing barn. The building’s former use is therefore also part of the history of the museum site. The exhibitions cover both the microregion and life in Buchlovice: the ground floor features an exhibition about the fourteen municipalities of the Buchlov microregion. In the attic, an exhibition presents the history, folk culture and life of Buchlovice’s former residents.
The two exhibition levels have different focuses. The ground floor looks at the microregion and its fourteen municipalities; the attic explores the history and folk culture, as well as the lives of Buchlovice’s former residents. If you are particularly interested in local history, the museum offers a different perspective from the castle’s architectural and garden history.
St. Martin’s Church: Architecture and Art
The early Baroque St. Martin’s Church in Buchlovice was built between 1640 and 1643 on the site of an older church. Preserved details of its furnishings include the main altar, which is complemented by a valuable copy of a painting of Saint Martin by Van Dyck. The tower also preserves a dated sequence: it has four bells from 1519, 1680, 1686 and 1754.
The construction period, altarpiece and bells represent different aspects of the church’s heritage. The bells’ dates range from the early 16th to the 18th century; together with the building’s history, they show that the church’s historical significance cannot be attributed to just one date. For travellers interested in architecture or art history, these details complement the themes of the castle and museum with another perspective on Buchlovice.
Another highlight at the castle nursery
The castle nursery is another attraction that can add to a cultural stay. Visitors can buy a fuchsia variety of their choice there with expert guidance. This is a tangible connection to garden culture and differs from the historical themes of the castle, museum and church.
