Modrá offers a variety of things to explore during a stay: the history of Great Moravia, exhibitions about water and nature, and an educational trail that runs through the village and the valley of the Modranský potok into the Chřiby Mountains.

Archaeology and the history of Great Moravia

The Archeoskanzen Modrá represents a fortified settlement from the Great Moravian period. It is based on actual archaeological finds, some of which were made right at the open-air museum site. From the Archeoskanzen palace, you can visit the Klenotnice Velké Moravy exhibition hall. The early medieval Church of St John in Modrá is now a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. You can also try out old craft techniques at the Archaeological Open-Air Museum.

Events take place at the Archeoskanzen and in the municipality of Modrá in every season, and some have become traditions over many years. Individual dates change. If you are planning your stay around an event, check its dates in advance. Dogs are allowed at the Archeoskanzen but must be kept on a leash.

Water worlds and nature

Živá voda is a botanical and limnological exhibition about life in and around water. It covers aquatic animals and plants of the Morava River, nearby streams and ponds. Visitors can observe carp, pike and beluga sturgeon in a pond through a glass tunnel. Check before your visit to see whether the tunnel is accessible.

The Živá voda complex also includes an artificial natural swimming pond. Special plants filter its water naturally. Whether swimming is possible depends on the season and conditions at the time.

Trails, ponds and views

The five-kilometre Fauna and Flora of the Chřiby educational trail runs through Modrá and is suitable for walkers and cyclists. It starts at the Convent Pond near the Velehrad pilgrimage basilica, passes through Modrá and the valley of the Modranský potok, and continues into the Chřiby Mountains. The route described therefore covers both the village and the transition into the valley and onward into the mountain range.

A cascade of six ponds lies in the valley of the Modranský potok, home to numerous rare and protected animals, especially amphibians. From the Živá voda complex, you can reach the Stezka praturů via a footbridge that runs up to four metres above the ground. The route has twelve themed stops, where visitors can observe aurochs and learn about their history and their return to Moravian pastures after 2,000 years.

The small wooden Židoviny observation tower stands above the northern edge of Modrá. It is another named landmark in the municipality’s landscape.

Regional drinks and traditions

At the Centrum historie a tradic Modrá, you can sample regional fruit spirits and wine. You can also learn about the fruit distilling process and the history of winegrowing. Alongside archaeology and nature, regional drinks and the history of their production are therefore also among the topics you can consider when planning your stay in Modrá.
