Hostětín: Nature Garden, Wood Art and Regional Products
Accommodation in Hostětín
Hostětín combines nature and educational activities with local culture and production. Centrum Veronica’s public educational and information services focus on sustainable regional development. Educational trails, the “Sochy v krajině” (Sculptures in the Landscape) project and the nature garden complement these themes; the local cider press and Jablečná slavnost (Apple Festival) represent regional products as well as culture and environmental education.
Wood Art and Landscape
The “Sochy v krajině” (Sculptures in the Landscape) project connects 15 wooden sculptures along a trail. Some installations are located within the cadastral area of Hostětín. Works are placed at viewpoints, springs and sites associated with local legends. The project thus complements the mosaic typical of the White Carpathians, made up of fields, gardens, orchards, meadows and predominantly deciduous forests.
Nature Garden and Centrum Veronica
Centrum Veronica was built in 2006 as the first public building in the Czech Republic to meet the passive house standard. Its educational and information services are aimed at the public and focus on sustainable regional development and practical ways to achieve it.
The nature garden at Centrum Veronica is open year-round and free to access; admission is by voluntary donation. Check local information before travelling. Various features in the nature garden encourage biodiversity. These include shelters and nesting structures for reptiles, birds, bumblebees, hedgehogs, insects and bats.
The demonstration nature garden and orchard engage the public through an educational trail and playful activities. Topics include nature-friendly gardening, preserving old fruit varieties and restoring extensive ecological orchards in the landscape.
Cider Press and Regional Products
Since 2000, organic apple cider and organic herbal syrups have been made at the local cider press in Hostětín. More than four-fifths of production is certified “BIO – Product of Organic Farming”. For apples, the cider press gives preference to suppliers who farm organically in the White Carpathians. The product information presents two aspects separately: certification applies to the share of production, while the regional origin statement refers to the preferred source of the apples.
Educational Trails and Jablečná slavnost
The educational trails each have different features: “Po zelené Hostětínem” (Through Hostětín on the Green Trail) is about 1.5 km long and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Trail conditions and signage may change, so check both before setting out. “Naokolo Hostětína” (Around Hostětín) offers beautiful views from higher ground. In good visibility, the pilgrimage sites of Velehrad and Hostýn can be seen above Pitín. In short, the first trail is described by its length and mode of travel, while the second is distinguished by its views and visibility conditions.
Jablečná slavnost (Apple Festival) is held every September in Hostětín, at the foot of the White Carpathians. The programme also includes culture and environmental education. Exact dates and programme details vary each year; check them if you want to plan your stay around the festival.
