Prakšice: Wine-Growing History, Church and Folklore
Accommodation in Prakšice
Prakšice combines a historic focal point with a distinctive valley setting. The first surviving written reference, the history of wine growing and a folklore tradition that is still vibrant give the village a historical dimension. A cycling path into the surrounding area and a motocross track also add opportunities for exercise and sport. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Prakšice, you can focus on local history, the landscape or a range of sporting interests.
Wine Growing and Local History
The first surviving written reference to Prakšice dates from 1141; it appears in a charter issued by Jindřich Zdík, Bishop of Olomouc. Wine growing is another historical thread: it developed in Prakšice and continued through the 15th and 16th centuries. Before 1620, the village had 81 měřic of vineyard land.
The names of the former growing areas are also part of this history. The historic wine-growing area of Stará Hora is now called Staré vinohrady. Later, vineyards were also planted on Nová hora; this area is now part of the village district of Vinohrady.
Church and Folklore
The Church of Christ the King was solemnly consecrated on June 22, 1941, and renovated between 1998 and 2001. The Prakšické krojované hody s právem are part of a folklore tradition that remains vibrant in the community. At the 2021 Pašovsko-prakšické hody, the costumed festival group took part in a Sunday morning procession to a Mass at the Church of Christ the King. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the dates for your chosen year.
Valley, Streams and Nature Park
Prakšice lies in a valley on the banks of the Holomňa and Prakšický potok streams; deep forests surround the valley on two sides. The adjacent Prakšická vrchovina is a nature park with diverse flora and fauna. These are two distinct landscape features to orient yourself by: the village’s valley setting and the neighboring nature park.
Several water reservoirs have revived the village’s historical traditions of pond farming and fishing. Today, members of the local Rybářský spolek Holomňa look after them. In Prakšice, water is therefore not only part of the landscape but is also connected with local tradition and community involvement.
Cycling Path and Motocross Track
A cycling path connects Prakšice with the surrounding area. The motocross track offers a different kind of sport: its course includes elevation changes, jumps and banked turns; it is also used for motocross races and sporting events. Training requires arranging access by phone with the operator in advance. As access conditions can change, confirm the required arrangement with the operator again before your visit.
