Ceramics, folk architecture, pilgrimage and winegrowing are among the defining themes of Tupesy. The Zlechovský potok stream and paths with views of the Chřiby hills are also part of the village’s character. This gives you several ways to plan your trip: historic buildings and crafts, religious traditions, or routes to explore on foot or by bike.

Ceramics history and archaeological finds

The Tupeské keramiky Museum is housed in Tupesy’s oldest building, dating from 1832. The building is a monument of folk architecture and represents the home of a smallholder and potter. The museum therefore brings together local history and the craft of ceramics. In the ceramics workshop, visitors can make a plate themselves. If you plan to take part in this hands-on activity, check its current availability in advance.

A much earlier layer of the village’s history is revealed by a find in the “Za Branou” area: a Slavic sunken-floored building from the late 9th or early 10th century was discovered there. The finds included numerous fragments of vessels in various shapes. The discovery dates from a different era than the ceramics museum building and adds an archaeological perspective on the past to its connection with local ceramics history.

Ceramics trail, cycling route and landscape

The 2 km-long Stezka keramiků leads to places in Tupesy associated with the local ceramics tradition. It is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Original wood carvings embellish the route, and seating areas offer views of the Chřiby panorama. The route thus combines a local cultural theme with views of the landscape.

A longer cycling option is the Velkomoravská poutní cesta 5150, which runs from Staré Město railway station via Velehrad to Tupesy. The section to Tupesy is 8 km long and suitable for all cyclists. By comparison, the 2 km-long Stezka keramiků is the shorter route and runs within Tupesy. The different lengths can help you choose between a short themed route and a longer section leading to the village. Check the current route markings before setting out.

Tupesy lies in the fertile floodplain of the Zlechovský potok stream, whose source is in the forests of the Chřiby. The hills are also part of the Stezka keramiků: from the seating areas, you can see their panorama. The stream landscape and the views offer two different perspectives on the village and its surroundings.

Chapel and living traditions

The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built from sandstone blocks. Its Neo-Romanesque construction was completed in 1852. The traditional Tupesy pilgrimage around May 31 is associated with the chapel. After the last pilgrimage in 1967, the tradition was revived in 2014; these dates trace its historical development.

Tupesy’s Slovácko traditions still include Fašanky, with carnival processions accompanied by cimbalom music. Winegrowing and winemaking also have a long tradition in the village. The “Císařské hody” folk festival takes place on the third Sunday in October. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the date in advance.
