Topolná: Folk Architecture, Folklore and Nature
Accommodation in Topolná
Topolná offers several distinct themes for your trip: the rural architecture of the Pomoraví region, exhibitions about historical everyday activities, church art, folklore and an educational trail about flooded meadows. The museum’s visiting arrangements and the September date of the traditional festival are also important when planning your trip.
Folk Architecture at Muzeum v přírodě Topolná
The open-air museum Muzeum v přírodě Topolná comprises farmsteads No. 90 and 93, which stand on Topolná’s village square. Both are monuments of folk architecture. Their construction illustrates the typical form of houses in the Pomoraví region, built from unfired bricks. Together, the two farmsteads offer a tangible insight into regional building culture.
Building No. 93 presents the way of life and furnishings of a farmstead from the late 19th century. Its upper chamber also houses exhibitions about washing and fishing. The themes therefore range from architectural styles to the everyday activities of the time. Building No. 93 is open to the public; advance booking is required.
From April to October, you can visit the museum Monday through Sunday by prior arrangement. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip, especially if you want to fit your visit into a specific day’s schedule.
The courtyard of building No. 90 also serves a cultural purpose: it is used by the Včelaran folklore ensemble as a rehearsal space and a venue for cultural programs. The museum thus brings together the historical use of a farmstead and the continuing use of its courtyard for folklore and culture.
Church Art and Folklore in Topolná
The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary houses a rare statue of Saint Anne from the 18th century. Since 1999, the church has also had stained-glass windows designed by Jan Jemelka. The two artworks represent different periods: the statue dates from the 18th century, while the windows have been part of the church since 1999.
Another cultural highlight is Slovácké hody s právem, a traditional festival that is still celebrated in Topolná on the last Saturday and Sunday in September. A group of young people in traditional costumes parades through the village, accompanied by a brass band. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.
Educational Trail and Nature
The “PO TOPOLSKÝCH LÚKÁCH” educational trail is a circular route with original hand-painted information panels and several shelters. Its subject is flooded meadows, which are considered a historical phenomenon in this area. The circular route connects a landscape theme with a format that differs from the farmstead exhibitions. Visitors interested in the history of these meadows will find a dedicated way to explore the topic here.
A botanical highlight of the area is the very rare floodplain plant violka vyvýšená. It grows in only a few places in Moravia and is also found in Topolná, including in the area around Kněžpolský les. This nature-related detail adds a botanical aspect to the themes of architecture and folklore, without implying that the plant can be spotted on the educational trail.
Exploring Topolná by Bike
A cycling route also passes through Topolná: it runs from Podolí through Jarošov and Kněžpole to Topolná, and continues to Březolupy. The section through Topolná is designated cycling route 5055. This places the village on the course of this named route. No information about travel time or route length is provided. Signage and road conditions may change; check them before your ride.
You can plan your stay around different interests: the museum and church focus on folk architecture and art history, while the Hody festival centers on folklore and takes place at a set time in September. The educational trail explores flooded meadows, while the cycling route includes Topolná as part of a longer named route.
