Staré Hutě lies in a deep valley in the Chřiby Hills; the village’s houses line both banks of the Kyjovka. The history of the local glassworks is also part of the village’s character. The surrounding area offers forests, trails and natural attractions, while the chapel and memorial tree recall different chapters in the village’s history. If you are looking for a hotel in Staré Hutě, you can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you would mainly like to explore on foot or by bike, discover the landscape, or learn about the settlement’s history.

Hiking and cycling routes through Staré Hutě

The Velkomoravská pilgrimage route and a green-marked KČT hiking trail pass through Staré Hutě. The long-distance Jihlava–Český Těšín cycling route also runs through the village. This offers a choice of routes for travelling on foot or by bike, though no specific route length or walking time is given.

Other routes pass through several places in the region. The “From the Baťa Canal Valley to the Chřiby Ridge” cycling route runs through Břestek, Staré Hutě and Buchlovice. The “A walk in the Chřiby Hills: around Břestecká skála, Buchlovský kámen and Buchlov Castle” hiking route goes from Břestek via Salaš and Staré Hutě to Buchlovice. On the hiking route, Salaš is listed between Břestek and Staré Hutě; the cycling route also passes through Břestek, Staré Hutě and Buchlovice. When planning, you can therefore choose between a cycling route and a described hiking route that follows a different sequence of places.

Forests, a spring and a rock formation

The area around Staré Hutě has well-preserved Carpathian beech forests. They provide a habitat for numerous rare plant and animal species. The forests are also well known among mushroom pickers from the wider area. For those interested in the landscape, these forest areas—known for their natural features—complement the routes that pass through the village.

The Hladná voda spring lies about two kilometres northeast of Staré Hutě, near a hunting lodge of the same name, and is considered abundant. Another natural attraction is Buchlovský kámen: this rock formation is in the cadastral area of Staré Hutě, about 1.5 kilometres to the east along the yellow-marked trail. It forms a partly wooded, flat ridge with an isolated twelve-metre-high sandstone rock. The spring and the rock formation therefore differ both in type and in their stated direction and approximate distance.

The history of the glassworks and local places of remembrance

Staré Hutě was established in connection with the founding of local glassworks at the beginning of the 18th century. By the end of the 19th century, the village was known for producing mother-of-pearl goods.

Local buildings and places of remembrance include the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from the second half of the 19th century. A protected old small-leaved lime tree, designated as a memorial tree, also stands on the former glassworks site. Together with the historic connection to the glassworks, these places offer another point of interest for visitors who would like to include the history of Staré Hutě in their trip as well as hiking or cycling.

A horseback ride as another option

About one kilometre to the east, in the nearby area, is the historic Zikmundův dvůr, also known as Zikmundov or Dvorek. Horseback riding is available there; please confirm current availability before your arrival. This adds another activity to consider when planning a trip, alongside hiking and cycling routes. If a horseback ride is important to you, check availability in advance; for route choices, you can refer to the routes and places mentioned above.
