Ryžoviště can be explored through several distinct themes: the Ryžoviště–Břidličná nature trail leads to Výšina and combines expansive views of the surrounding area with information about gold panning. In the town, architectural and art history are joined by the memory of Lafayette. You can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on the landscape, historic architecture or local history.

Nature Trail to Výšina

The Ryžoviště–Břidličná nature trail starts behind the primary school in Ryžoviště and leads to Výšina, which stands 682 metres high. From there, the view stretches far across the surrounding area. Six information boards provide details about gold panning in Ryžoviště. This brings a specific destination in the landscape and a local theme together along the same route. Výšina gives the trail a distinct landmark in the landscape, while the boards focus on gold panning. This makes it possible to understand the nature trail in terms of both its destination and its theme.

Church and Religious Art

The Church of St John the Baptist is a prominent visual landmark in the surrounding area. It is a single-nave masonry church with a Renaissance core and was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1758. The terms describe different aspects: “single-nave” refers to the ground plan, while the Renaissance core and Baroque remodelling mark its architectural layers from different periods. Its origins are believed to be medieval; a record of a parish dating from the mid-16th century has been preserved as evidence. Thus, a cautious estimate of its origins sits alongside a later historical reference.

Another facet of religious art in Ryžoviště is the Baroque stone statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. It dates from 1733 and was created by the sculptor J. G. A. Heinz. Two putto figures are part of the design of its pedestal. This detail draws attention not only to the main subject but also to the craftsmanship of the pedestal. Unlike the church, whose history can be understood through its architectural form and several layers from different periods, the statue can be dated to a specific year and attributed to a named sculptor. In this way, architecture and sculpture offer different perspectives on the town’s religious heritage.

Lafayette and Local History

The Lafayette House is a single-storey Empire-style building and a former magistrate’s residence dating from the late 18th century. In 1792, the French general Lafayette was held there. The architecture and the historical event give the house different historical reference points: its former function and date of construction on the one hand, and Lafayette’s detention on the other. The building is privately owned and not open to the public. Visits to the local history exhibition about Lafayette in Ryžoviště can be arranged in person or by telephone through the municipal office. If you would like to include this part of the town’s history in your plans, arrange your exhibition visit through the municipal office.
