Roudno: Volcanic Landscape, Views and Cultural Heritage

Roudno can be explored through two themes: Velký Roudný as a volcanic natural monument and the municipality’s historic memorial sites. The Velký Roudný National Nature Monument has been protected since 1966. It protects a uniquely well-preserved stratovolcano from the Early Quaternary in the Bohemian Massif. The natural and cultural themes thus offer different starting points for choosing your destination.

Volcanic Landscape and Views from Velký Roudný

Velký Roudný has three lava flows. A quarry was formerly operated in the longest, northeastern lava flow to extract basalt. This brings together two aspects of the site: the geological significance of the protected stratovolcano and the former use of its basalt. The history of the quarry remains clearly a historical part of the landscape.

The Velký Roudný observation tower was built in 2007. The 20-metre-high wooden structure is made of glued larch beams, rests on concrete foundations and has a covered viewing platform at the top. From there, the view extends to the Hrubý Jeseník ridge, Nízký Jeseník, Krnovsko, Opavsko, the Beskydy Mountains and the Oderské vrchy. The tower thus combines distinctive construction with views across several named landscapes.

Trails and Destinations at the Summit

The “Po vulkanitech” educational trail leads to the summit of Velký Roudný. The Křížová cesta Stations of the Cross has a different, specifically named destination: it leads to the memorial to the victims of the First World War near the summit. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between these routes according to whether you want to reach the summit itself or a memorial site near the summit.

The municipality is also linked to a cycling route: regional cycle route No. 6148 runs through the cadastral area of Roudno. As route details may change, check the current route before setting out. The reference to the cadastral area describes the route’s course, not a specific route through the village centre.

Chapel, Traditions and Memorial Sites

The Velký Roudný Chapel is protected as an immovable cultural monument under number 3941; it has been protected since 16 September 1996. A mass in honour of Saints Peter and Paul is held there every year. Since 1978, the New Year’s ascent of Velký Roudný and the gathering at the chapel have also been traditions of the municipality of Roudno. The memorial to the victims of the First World War in Roudno consists of three commemorative plaques mounted on tuff stones. They commemorate residents of the municipality who fell, died or went missing between 1914 and 1918. The memorial is registered as an immovable cultural monument and was fully reconstructed in 2015. Its plaques and dates clearly connect the commemoration to the affected residents and the period of the war.

Another cultural monument is St Michael’s Church in Roudno. It is listed in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 102169. A distinctive architectural detail is that the faces of its clock tower are made of 24-karat gold. Together with the chapel and the war memorial, the church adds to the picture of the religious and historical themes of the place, while these three buildings do not serve the same purpose.
