Castle and Local History

Jindřichov Castle is a good starting point for learning about the town’s history. It was built in the second half of the 17th century by the Hodic family of Hodice. It acquired its present-day Empire-style appearance after being rebuilt following a fire in 1844. A tour route through the castle includes, among other things, the Knights’ Hall, the library, an exhibition of historical toys and the Small Jindřichov Museum. Tour and access conditions may change, so check the latest visitor information before visiting the castle.

The museum is on the first floor of the castle. Photographs and objects there illustrate Jindřichov’s pre-war and post-war history, the local castle and brewery, and the everyday lives of its residents. The brewery’s history also goes back a long way: a brewery was established in Jindřichov in 1589, making it one of the very first breweries in Moravia. The castle, museum and brewery thus offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

Church, Castle Park and Historic Monuments

Today’s Church of St. Nicholas was designed after the model of a Roman basilica; archival sources document it in 1672. The three-aisled building has a prismatic tower and is surrounded by a wall with Baroque statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Florian. Another Baroque work stands near the main entrance to the castle grounds on the main road: a monumental Marian column with additional figures of saints, dating from 1757. The Marian ensemble is protected as a monument for its artistic value.

The castle park contains a protected castle belvedere dating from the first half of the 19th century. The park is open to the public from May to September. As visits are seasonal, it is advisable to check the latest notices before going.

Chapels and Rural Cultural Heritage

Arnultovice is also home to several notable historic buildings. These include a newly restored masonry Marian chapel, a protected rural house dating from the 18th century and a detached, boarded barn from the 19th century. Both buildings are protected as monuments. Their different architectural forms and dates offer visitors a tangible glimpse of the district’s built heritage.

North of Jindřichov, the Swedish Chapel stands on pastureland near the Polish border. It is considered an example of high-quality folk architecture from the last quarter of the 19th century. Its location and the chapel in Arnultovice illustrate two distinct aspects of the local cultural heritage.
