Mezina lies in the Nízký Jeseník in a gently sloping valley extending from the Černý potok at 476 m above sea level to Venušina sopka at 665 m above sea level. Volcanic formations, outdoor trails and individual architectural and memorial sites give the town a variety of points of interest. If you choose Mezina as a travel destination, you can therefore focus on geological features, seasonal activities or local history.

Volcanic Landscape

The Lávový proud u Meziny natural monument protects an exposed lava flow from Venušina sopka. The plagioclase basalt contains numerous olivine inclusions, as well as well-defined columnar and spheroidal joints. At the outcrop, the basalt columns are several decimetres in diameter; their cross-sections are usually hexagonal and more rarely pentagonal. Weathering forms spherical blocks. At the outcrop, the column cross-sections display a regular pattern, while the spherical blocks reveal a different form of weathered basalt.

Venušina sopka itself is a small remnant of a cinder cone that has been heavily altered by cinder extraction. The cone consists of volcanic cinders and spindle-shaped bombs and was formed by a Strombolian-type eruption. As a geotourism attraction and excursion site, it is a specific point of interest for anyone interested in how volcanic landscapes form. Since local conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest conditions before visiting.

Trails, Seasons and Breaks

A forest path near Mezina leads from the road to remarkable rock formations made of regularly shaped stones with blocky jointing. The block-like structure of the rocks here creates a different landscape impression from the columnar structure at the lava flow.

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Mezina through the Bruntálský les to Bruntál. Another blue-marked trail leads from Mezina to the Pod Venušinou sopkou junction. Check the current trail markings on site before setting out.

Mezina is a destination for cyclists in summer; in winter, cross-country skiers can enjoy the area when snow conditions are good. This distinction matters when choosing a season: cycling is associated with summer, while cross-country skiing requires good snow conditions. Rest areas for cyclists and hikers have been set up in the lower part of the town.

Architecture and Local History

The protected, renovated Vodičkův dům No. 53 farmhouse is built in the late Empire style and has an elaborately articulated façade. The historic Church of the Holy Trinity in Mezina has a lantern dating from 1778. Its perimeter wall was renovated in 2003. The dates refer to different features: 1778 to the lantern and 2003 to the wall.

The Mezina war memorial commemorates the victims of the First World War. It is made of tuff and decorated with a copper heart bearing the inscription “Všem lidem dobré vůle” (“To all people of good will”). Mezina is also the birthplace of Alois Fischer, a painter from the Jeseník region. A memorial site and a biographical connection thus complement the town’s architectural history.

Autumn Events

Mezina’s autumn programme includes the Posvícení festival and the Běh o Mezinský bodlák race. If you would like to plan your stay around either event, check the current events calendar for dates.
