Hochofen: Educational Trail, Nature and Sacred Heritage
Accommodation in Hochofen
When planning a stay in Hochofen (Vysoká Pec), you can explore outdoor activities, regional history, wetland plants and sacred architecture. A 9 km educational trail with twelve information panels sits alongside the history of tin ore processing; nature-related highlights include a nature reserve and Šafránová louka. In Rudné, the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary has its own architectural focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Hochofen, these different themes may help you plan your stay.
The Educational Trail and Its Route
The Vysoká Pec–Rudné educational trail is 9 km long and has 12 information panels. Its length gives you a concrete idea of how much time to allow for the route in your daily plans; the panels also mark the trail’s educational purpose. For travelers who enjoy walking, this trail can be a main focus of their activities.
The Water Channel and Tin Ore Processing
The Rudenský water channel is 12 km long and is still largely preserved today. It was built around the middle of the 16th century to bring water from the Chaloupky Valley for tin ore processing. The structure’s function connects water supply with a specific processing step, making it possible to understand its role in the region’s tin ore history. While the trail, with its route and information panels, offers an activity-focused experience, the water channel illustrates the earlier technical use of water.
Wetland Plants and Landscape
The nature reserve in Vysoká Pec protects rare wetland plants, especially round-leaved sundew. It was designated in part of the municipality in 1995. Its natural heritage focus is therefore clearly on wetland flora. Šafránová louka offers a different point of interest: it was registered as a significant landscape feature in 1999, and the critically endangered white-flowered crocus grows there. The two natural features have different designations: one is a nature reserve focused on wetland plants, while the other is a registered landscape feature where an endangered species occurs.
Sacred Architecture and Historic Processions
In Rudné, the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary has a pseudo-Romanesque high altar, two opposing Rococo side altars and a Rococo pulpit. The stylistic contrast lies in the shift from a design inspired by Romanesque forms for the high altar to Rococo for the other furnishings mentioned. This provides architecture enthusiasts with a concrete comparison within the church’s interior.
The former Stricke Chapel in Vysoká Pec stood on the old road from Liščí kout (Fuchswinkel) to Nové Hamry. Processions used to set out from the chapel for the church in Rudné. The chapel was demolished in the 1950s; only overgrown wall remains near two maple trees have survived. The site is inaccessible and privately owned. The chapel is thus associated with a former procession and inaccessible remains, while the church in Rudné is notable for its specific interior furnishings.
